Maybe we need a new poll, something like:
Kindle is mostly for: Women Men Readers: gender doesn't matter. I had some trouble answering the original poll; my first reaction was "well of course it's for women (too); it's not like you need a body part women don't have in order to press the buttons." My second reaction was, "oh, you mean, is it meant for women and not men. Of course not; it's meant for people who read." As for romance books being available; I don't think that proves anything about gender ratio in Kindle usage. For one thing, I have at least one male friend who has a whole wall full of romance books. For another, a lack of romance books might show they were not paying attention to women as a market sector. But the mere fact that they *are* paying attention to women doesn't mean they're excluding men in any way. It's not an either-or proposition. |

on the other hand, i do get the impression, from various posts, that romance readers tend to be pretty voracious and buy a LOT of books, so it would probably make a lot of business sense to make as many as possible available to promote new formats. |

Yes. But only because the Kindle doesn't support comic books in full color just yet.

Yes it is. In fact, all e-books and books are for women. So, any of you men out there, you'll have to turn yours in RIGHT NOW. Women are standing by to take them away from you.
Monkeys with blogs. We pay attention to them exactly why? |

I'm female, I use a Kindle, I read few romances or chick lit [tho I like a little romance in my life ;>}] and my favorite genre changes with my moods. Today I downloaded "The Post-American World, The Last Kingdom and for free, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood.
Like desertgrandma, I also have Lady Chatterly loaded. My point here is just to say that labeling women's reading tastes and tech ability is as silly as trying to pigeon hole men's. I've been tech savvy for some time. After mastering my latest Mac and iTouch, it was just natural for me to want a Kindle. My husband likes the concept, but finds reading on my Kindle awkward. He has big fingers and touches the wrong keys while trying to hold it, sending him back and forth across my Kindle's universe. He's a PC man, which may explain his inability to perform simple tasks. But I digress. So, is it a woman's device? Doesn't have to be, but a little redesign based on usage patterns, finger size and logic might increase the appeal to men. |

I stopped reading those bodice ripper type books when I was about 21 and realized that I would probably die a virgin, and it wasn't doing me any good to even imagine that sex was anything like it was in those books.
That's about the time I dove back into fantasy and science fiction, and I've never looked back. That said ... one thing I sort of like about e-readers generally is that no one can tell what you are reading, unless they are parked over your shoulder. It could be "Man and Superman" ... or just plain old "Superman." It's all got the same cover. |
