Cool! Then you download a book that is, by some other means allocated to that collection, and the collection magically appears? I love magic!

On a new Kindle you'll have nothing other than the User Guide on it in Device View. All your books and collections will be in the Cloud.

To make a collection visible on the device, you press and hold it, and select the "Show in all views" box.

To make a book visible on the device, you download it.

When I got my KV, I downloaded all my collections. I have 2 collections for samples, fiction and nonfiction. On the home screen, these collections did not show up because they were empty. However, when I selected a book (or sample) to place in a collection, they showed up on the list as options. Once I added something to them they showed up on the home page.

Spoiler: [ I think I had a fuzzy brain moment. I was thinking back to when a collection would always have had the cloud entries in it, greyed out. I was thinking that NOW a starred collection wouldn't show up if none of its books were downloaded, but clearly a brand newly created collection can be empty, so that's not a problem. Ignore me. I'm clearly not all here today. ]
