![]() A good chance of making it unusable by the owner... Yep. The Company I was working for had a much needed shipment of Point of Sale computers arrive almost at the deadline because the truck could not get through because of an ice storm. We unloaded the truck, Opened the 20 cartons immediately, Powered them on to do the needed configuration. 50% had permanent hard drive issues within the first hour ![]() From then on, all systems set on the bench without power for 24 hours. No more problems. |

When it is below 0 C, certainly. The outdoors can be awfully peaceful when everyone else is hiding out indoors.
![]() When it is below 0 F, eInk doesn't fare very well. I have read outdoors under such conditions, which is how I know that. I have also used LCD based devices to read outdoors under such conditions, just so that I could read for extended periods. It actually isn't so bad if you're bundled up properly and have a device with physical buttons for turning pages. (Touch screens and gloves don't work very well.) |

My ereader of choice is as tolerant of the cold as I am, so no need to switch. When I'm taking it somewhere it fits in my coat pocket, which zips shut, so it's secure.
Be interesting to see how cold temperatures would affect the NiMH batteries I use for it. Back in the 70s I had to keep spare batteries for my 35mm SLR (film) camera inside my coat because temps much below freezing would "deactivate" them. I haven't had any problems like that with my ereader, though. |

I find I'm not needing to be fully under the duvet. I keep the temperature at 65F at night starting at 10pm. It's not too cold at night indoors. Besides, all I need is a thumb to change the page. A quick and easy swipe works very well. Also, I don't have to keep my hand at any one place because of a button in a fixed location.

Yes, I read while waiting for the bus. I learnt the hard way last year that e-ink is not happy in extremely cold conditions so I have now switched to reading on my phone, which has the added bonus of being backlit, useful in the early nightfall of winter. I have mittens with a flip top which allow me sneak one fingertip out to turn pages, although I can also do that with the accelerometer and a flick of the wrist. Haven't quite got that motion down yet though.
So I load one book on my phone and a different book on my ereader for reading at home, and enjoy accordingly. |

Paperbooks at work in the winter. Kindle can't handle sub-freezing weather, even if it just sits in the vehicle while I'm out working. And no warm up time needed for my paperback either :-)
