As for this one, I'm still convinced that it's a sublime work of genius. "So bad that it's good" isn't even appropriate since "so genuinely crazy that it's incredibly awesome" is much more accurate.

Total Recall (I beleive it's based on a PK Dick sotry, "We can remember it for you wholesale")

Most of the movies made from his stories bear little resemblance, but this one is the worst. They threw away the entire story idea.

The Last Mimsy (Mimzy were the Borogroves)

I'm still pissed about this one. The movie completely missed the point of the story.

One time I e-mailed an ex-girlfriend of mine and told her "I think I'm going crazy. Just kidding, I'm not going crazy." How would you interpret that action?

The movie of "Dune" (not to be confused with the mini-series which I rather liked).

I hate it when they take a gigantic sweeping story and try to pare it down to 2 or 3 hours. Tons of exposition or having the characters' thoughts in voice over to explain things for the viewer.

The Golden Compass had the same problem ... too many characters yaking about the history of things in a manner that is so unnatural.

The second one character in a movie starts explaining the entire history of whatever universe they are living in ... I know I'm in trouble.

Dune - Captain Picard before the acting lessons.

one of my favorite movies is blade runner although it certainly didn't capture much of "do androids dream of electric sheep".

Probably my three favorite film interpretations of books are all of children's books. You might groan. Sorry. The Muppets' Christmas Carol, Black Beauty, and The Little Princess (all 1990's films). Loved 'em and still watch them occasionally even though my daughters are now adults. You may now hit the delete button. There's isn't one?! Sorry.

Hmm, I must say I really, *really* liked Paul Verhofen's version. I pretty much like all his movies. Totally peaked and surreal, but with a message. Like Robocop. I'm a Verhofen fan, even if I don't know, right now, how to spell his name

You are right, I didn't know this. Children of Men was a really disturbing film, and I liked it a lot.
Anyone notice the 15-minute one-take-scene where they flee a bunch of people in a minivan? Great stuff!
EDIT: here's a making of. Amazing!

One movie that was definitely BETTER than the book it was based on was "Jaws".

I actually quite liked 'Bicentennial Man'; the story made me cry and although the Robin Williams film was in no way the film of the book (or at least only vaguely), it was entertaining and enjoyable in it's own right.
Haven't read Stardust but loved the film.

And, of course, 'The Princess Bride'. I only read the book a couple of years ago. Since I was about 6 years old I had believed that there was a real book called the Princess Bride by S.S. Morganstern. There was much crying in my flat when I eventually finished.
Similarly, my partner had gone all the way through 'Memoirs of a Geisha' thinking it was a 'true biography' and was a bit miffed when I had to gently explain otherwise. No tears though.

Will doubtless be back again (again) when I remember more....

Phillip Pullman's "Northern Lights", the film version of which was "The Golden Compass" (which I believe was the US title of the book). They turned a superb book into an almost meaninglessly garbled film. I can only shudder to anticipate how they're going to do to the rest of the trilogy .
