And I certainly hope they abandon plans for drones piloted by artificial intelligence, as these could kill people (for example, by downing power lines)*. But if Amazon wants to do something that's pretty harmless, like buying the .books domain, thus making visible its will to dominate the book trade, I like it.

My guess is that AI drones will prove far safer than drones piloted by even the best humans. Also far safer than the delivery trucks that are being used now.

I have always thought that the drone delivery idea one of the stupidest ideas going. You can't make deliveries to apartment buildings, and the first kid that gets accidentally whacked by one is going to trigger a massive lawsuit. Not to mention them being attacked by the larger predatory birds as the drone trespasses into their airspace.

Bowker was reportedly the last to drop out of the auction, run by DNS overseer ICANN.

Amazon also shelled out millions for the rights to dot-pay but was, surprisingly, beaten to dot-cloud by little-known Italian company Aruba. Also applying for dot-cloud were Google and Symantec, suggesting that Aruba paid a high price for the rights to the only gTLD that the company applied for.

Now that would've really raised a ruckus if ISBN-pimper Bowker had control of .book.

Amazon probably wasn't happy losing out on .cloud but they probably don't mind as much as if they'd lost it to Microsoft or Google.

Other new generic top-level domains that have been settled in the past week are: .chat, .dog, .earth, .film, .hot, .latino, .live, .online, .site, .sucks and .tennis. That leaves just two of the 16 domain-name extensions due to be auctioned off by 19 November: dot-dot and dot-apartments.

And there goes one serious money-making domain: .sucks.

Pretty much everybody in business needs to secure a bunch of those.

Only if it takes off as the go to home for hosting those sites. If the fortune 500 companies do buy their brands names in that domain then it wouldn't, there are too many other options. With so many top level domains opening up I think that companies will quickly realize they can't buy them all.

On the other hand "amazon.banana" might become a valuable piece of web real estate for hosting all the slippery slope arguments.

It's not so much a matter of hosting services and companies using the domain names so much as the companies blocking critics from actively using them.
Like, no way does Ford let Fordcars.suck get used. So they sign up for it and squat on it. Either way, they pay the domain fee. That is money in the bank.
(They really shouldn't have authorized that one but ICANN needs money, so...)

Anyway, the banana domain would have lots of uses.

Republic.banana should be very popular, for example.
Creampie.banana.
Minion.banana.
Monkey.banana.
And the ever popular: banana.banana.

And those would be used, not just squated.
