I am sure it would be tons easier for Amazon to only have one multilingual European storefront, but:

Unfortunately, that's exactly it.

You remember when they lied to us trying to make us believe how much better a single market and a single currency would be for us? They did not actually mean "us". Hell, I have to jump through hoops to purchase French music and ebooks when in the States AND when in Germany. Only way to do it is via Hide My Ass and a completley different account. Such a hassle, it would be tons easier to just torrent my content.

The stupid thing is that I can buy very good quality 2nd hand paper books from any EU country via Amazon often for a nominal amount (1p for example). I can also buy CDs or DVDs from any country but I can't download music from Amazon UK if I am in Spain and I can't even download music from Amazon UK when I'm in England even though I have a UK Amazon account and a UK bank account.

Oh, that, too. I have bought books and CDs from vendors on amazon.fr before.

I habitually buy second hand cd's through Amazon.co.uk. Often I only pay €0.01 (yes, 1 cent) and €2.50 shipping.

So basically, Amazon.nl is a storefront for the German and English stores. In the past, it redirected to the UK site.
You can buy and Kindle itself by using mailbox services like

I think the problem may be not in getting it delivered in the first place since lots of Amazon stuff comes from a warehouse in the UK, Germany or Hong Kong, but rather in the infrastructure for returning goods.

And it won't be the same price since on physical goods (and from January 2015 music, software and e-book downloads too) the VAT charged is that of the buyer's location.

So if someone in Denmark sees a paper book on Amazon.co.uk it is shown with UK VAT (0%) when it goes into their basket with a Danish address the checkout price includes VAT at 25%.

That actually makes sense as a reason/possible hurdle. In the US, states all charge varying percentages of VAT, but it's not a problem, since pricetags never include the tax. As a consumer, you have to do the math in your head, or wait to find out at checkout.

I'd suggest asking Amazon. If you're in the UK, have an Amazon UK account, and a UK credit card, you should certainly be able to buy.

Ambiguity since you need to register with a UK mail address, not just 'be in the UK'.

Going to Manage Your Kindle and changing your location ought to be possible, but if the billing address for your UK credit card isn't in the UK you may have a problem.

After installing the latest 5.6.x PW2 firmware update, which added Dutch (and Russian) user interface/keyboard support, the Van Dale Groot Woordenboek dictionaries as well as a couple of bilingual Oxford dictionaries were added to my Manage Your Contents and Devices Amazon page as available downloads.
Also, AFAIK, the latest iOS/Android Kindle apps now offer the Van Dale dictionaries (but not the bilingual Oxford dicionaries) as optional downloads.

I don't need a translation dictionary, just a normal Dutch one. I'll have to see if I can use the one from Android on the Kindle.

By the way, I've been seeing reports that Amazon.nl is much cheaper than Kobo NL. Maybe I should check that as well.
