I've never read 50 Shades but I doubt it is appropriate for teenagers. However, when I was a teenager (maybe even tween, I can't remember exactly), I was shopping with my dad and we wandered into a used book store. He told me to pick out a book for myself from the Teen section (we were not Young Adults back then). I selected Forever by Judy Blume because she was a well-known author and I had read some of her other books in school. I had NO idea what the book was about at the time (a girl's first relationship) and after reading it I was horrified that I had bought it with my father. He probably had no idea what the book was about either (I hope!). So maybe one or both of the two characters in the OP's story are innocent or just naive.
