So, it only had about 500MB available for books? I didn't know any of the Kobo devices had that little space.

I haven't seen mention of a smaller image. It might be possible to resize it, but I've never looked into it A 2GB card will work, and bigger probably will as well. If you go bigger, you can resize the user partition to fill the space.

According to Amazon, the Kobo Touch has 1 gig. Now how true that is, I don't know.

The Touch is advertised as having 1GB of available disk space. It actually has 2GB. This is broken into three partitions: rootfs and recoveryfs which are usually 256MB each and the rest in the user partition. The latter is the only one that is normally visible. My Touch shows 1.4GB of space. All of Kobo's e-ink devices work like this. But, the newer ones are getting 4GB total space.
