Since you're asking ... All of L M Montgomery's books are available here at MobileRead in MobiPocket format except Anne of Green Gables, the first book of the series. Dr. Drib posted a Sony version in May 2007 (see https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10728 ). Now that I've learned how to use the various software programs to do the conversion, I've got this on my list of books to create, but I want to finish the Bobbsey Twins series before I move on to something else.

Any of the books on this list would be fantastic.

oh my. i haven't even gotten to the 3rd category yet and already i can tell my "books to read" list is going to grow exponentially.

near the top will have to be Outwitting Fish and Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Nude Mice; 1978 (University of Tokyo Press), but i sense they will have to vye for their positions as i proceed down the list.

What? You mean The Foul and the Fragrant: Odor and the French Social Imagination, by Alain Corbin; 1986 doesn't resonate?

We've got that, in both English and French. It is an interesting read.

I've spent the day interviewing potential tutors and attempting to rescue a seagull chick.
I was just saying goodbye to a candidate when I saw a bunch of our admin staff outside, staring at a small grey bird. He had fallen from the gulls' nest on our roof (on the second floor, or third floor if you are in continental Europe) and was squawking furiously. The parent gulls were dive-bombing anyone who went near. It wasn't safe because the road is quite busy.
After a bit of trouble I caught the chick, who had no feathers but was covered in a soft grey down, and went to see the porter, so as to restore the bird to his nest on the roof. The porter claimed that there was no access to the roof, so I left the bird (to be called for) while I went to interview someone else. Meanwhile, the secretaries were getting instructions from the RSPB. Afterwards I went to retrieve the chick, and discovered that the porter had got security to take it away. The security person claimed that he was going to put the bird back. But he didn't. The parents were still searching for it when I went home at 6pm. The secretaries are furious and I'm annoyed. We could have put the bird back quite easily if security had let us get to the roof. And several people had offered to foster the bird if it was necessary. We shall be making a fuss about this on Monday morning.

that would have made me really angry. i really hate it how arrogant some people are towards other species, as if just because they aren't human we shouldn't bother to help them, or respect them, or treat them with kindness. when i was a child my parents knew an old woman who would take in injured or sick birds, or fledgelings who had fallen from their nest and couldn't be restored to it. occasionally a cat would catch one, and we would rescue it when possible and bundle it in a shoe box and rush to take it to her ; i always beleived that no matter how badly injured it was, if we just could get it to the bird lady it would be saved. i'm glad to know there are other people who will go to such lengths for a baby bird as well. it sounds like angelism, but showing kindness to helpless creatures gives me hope for us as a species.

constantinople not istanbul

on a more light-hearted note... in the grand tradition of a certain song* today i had an appointment in the rue St. Petersbourg. before leaving i checked my map to see where i was going. i couldn't find the street right away and i was a bit late so i left it ; i would just verify on the map in the métro station on my way out.

well perhaps it's time for a new map ; if i couldn't find that street, it's because on my map it's still called "rue Leningrad".

ironically, there is still a "rue Constantinople" right next to the rue St. Petersbourg.

Elsi, I've converted Anne of Green Gables and posted it in three formats (I forgot that it was already in LRF format). Unfortunately, I also forgot (is this forgetful Friday?) to update my copy of BD first so the em-dashes appear as hyphens. Sorry about that. I hope you find it acceptable and that you enjoy it, too.

Thank you for the effort. I had pulled the text file from PG, but after fighting with BD several times, had given up on it. I also downloaded the ABC Amber Sony Converter and had thought I'd try using it to rip the HTML out of Dr. Drib's LRF version and see how that worked.

Not being one to let a software program get the best of me, last weekend, I set myself the task of figuring out what I was doing wrong with BD and actually producing some books from PG files. I was finally successful and I am working my way through the Bobbsey Twins. Then I'm going to find some more "teen girl adventures" to compliment all the Tom Swift, High School Boys, etc. that are already in the download area.

So -- I very much appreciate you filling in this hole in the L M Montgomery bibliography here at MobileRead.
