Sorry, I see I was wrong about the BBC. The articles were removed from Google, not from the actual BBC site. I'm afraid I don't know any more about it than the article you link to says.

While I'd appreciate hard science in my popular fiction as much as the next geek, I think we need to accept hand-waving in SF about non-existant stuff as long as it serves the story and allows us to suspend disbelief.

Maybe not.
There are serious efforts looking into promising approaches to three of the SF staple drives: plasma drive, reactionless drive, and warp drive.
The former is up to the engineering demonstrator, the latter two are at the proof of principle test level; strange phenomena have been observed that suggest the advanced drives might not be totally impossible.

If the Skunkworks guys come through, the solar system at least will be wide open and unmanned interstellar probes will be doable, say within 10-20 lys...

It's the 21st century out there; things are getting interesting...

Oh, I don't mind the classic "one impossible thing per story". But idiot plot twists offend me. And it sounds like there are at least two in this one. (Plus a comparison to Classic Lost in Spacde.) Which is sad because I had hopes for this.

When it comes to SF gadgets, though, I would love to have Mirror Universe Kirk's magic eliminator so I won't have to share the world with wackos like the two in the linked articles. It really annoys me to have them in *my* world.
