Now read the reviews of the newest Onyx, Boyue and Tolinos: "blotchy", "non-uniform frontlight", "the contrast is not good" (I personally had two T68 devices. One has a great backlight. The other... not so great. Both have about the same contrast as my old Sony PRS-650, maybe even slightly less. Even the 2nd generation Kindle Paperwhite has better contrast).
A few points:
  1. The Tolino Shine, Onyx T68 and Boyues have the same generation of display as the 1st Gen PW (i.e. E-Ink Pearl). It is therefore unsurprising that they compare poorly with Carta-based Kindles.
  2. The reviews I've seen of the T68 (e.g. here and here) make no complaint about the screen.
  3. It is rather difficult to find English-language reviews of foreign-market-only models (e.g. Tolino Shine, i63ML), so claims about them really need to be backed up with the actual reviews they came from.
  4. Even (recent model) Kindles have quality issues, e.g. this review of the Voyage:

The only disappointing thing about the Kindle Voyage for me is the frontlight. When paying a premium amount for an ereader you expect it to be perfect. And unfortunately the frontlight isn't perfect. In fact it's not even as uniform as the frontlight on my Kindle Paperwhite 2. The Voyage has sort of an orange gradient at the top of the screen. Ninety percent of the time it's virtually undetectable, especially when using auto brightness and on lower brightness settings, so it's really not as big of an issue as it would seem.

But there are times when it is distracting and takes away from the reading experience. The gradient is more apparent with the brightness turned up high, and when reading at night in a dark room. It's especially noticeable when using landscape mode to read because each line goes from light to dark.

Frontlights vary a lot from one device to the next, however, so it's always hard to know what you're going to get. The Kindle Voyage has been getting complaints about the uneven lighting and different-colored hues from reviews on Amazon as well, so it's not an isolated issue. The variance it subtle enough that most people don't even notice it unless it is pointed out to them, so for most it's not a problem at all. But if you're super picky about screens and notice details like that it might bother you enough to return it.

But at the end of the day, I'm probably never going to use a Kindle (unless and until somebody works out how to completely replace its OS with an open version of Android), so am largely indifferent to comparisons to it. As long as my next eReader is a noticeable all-around improvement on my current i62HD, I will be happy.

Pocketbook Ultra 650, Onyx Boox I63ML Newton and Tolino Vision all have Carta displays. I've read many many many reviews (mostly in Russian) of the two former and many of them complain about the frontlight.

As for the frontlight on the Voyage - thanks for sharing the link. I admit that I didn't know about this and I do know that the frontlight on the Kindle Paperwhile 2 (and Kobo Aura HD) is widely praised for its uniformity. I didn't know that in the Vision the frontlight issues returned :-(

Has anyone had success in installing apps to the external storage?

This product looks great but from the limited reviews I have found it seems there is very little space allocated for apps on the internal drive (< 1 gb). I have some apps (eg OneNote) that download tons of content for off-line use that the data is stored as within the app. I know you can put files onto the external microSD card and read your books from there, but what about app installations?

I'm looking at purchasing either this or the Boyue T62. I personally find this Boox device much more attractive looking, and specs wise very comparable except for only 4gb (instead of 8gb) and smaller battery. So if I can work around this smaller internal storage I will likely choose this.

Thanks!

I have an Onyx Boox T68, which has 480 MB of storage for apps. I haven't seen the specs for the C67 and the others, but I suspect that app space is similarly limited. The Boyue T62 has about 1 gb for apps.

I know of no way to install apps to an external sd card. That said, it is possible to move some apps - at least in part - to the internal sd card in Settings. Moreover, check out FolderMount and similar apps. FolderMount moves data from the internal to the external sd card, while letting the apps think all the data in on internal. This could be one solution for you.

root your device and link apps (will void guarantee)

In order to install more apps, you need to root your device and link the appps to external SD.
- Get root master here http://www.androidfreeware.net/get-root-master.html
- Perform root
- Install Link2SD from PlayStore
- Format SD-card with a LINUX-PC (or boot from Linux Mint Live CD and run gparted): 1st partition (SD-size minus 1GB or 512MB) FAT32 (primary), 2nd partition (1GB or 512MB) ext2 (primary). Be sure to format SD-card and not your hard disk!
- Insert SD, start device and run Link2SD, select "mount at startup" and reboot.
- Use Link2SD to link files to ext2-partition. You can set Link2SD to automatic link mode.
Hint: If you want a native Android UI, install Apex launcher from PlayStore and Chrome-theme in black and white. You can switch back to Arta's UI any time in Apex settings.
Unfortunately Arta only offers a stripped down version of recovery mode, so no nandroid backup can be made. Before tinkering with your device I recommend downloading the appropriate update.zip file for your device here https://onyx-boox.com/support/firmware-android/ and put it on your SD-card first. In case you have messed up, start device with home-button pressed to start recovery which offers the option to install update.zip from external SD-card. Do a factory reset before installation.
