No. It was 7-zip, too. Got it here, I think. I installed it back in January 2013, when I first started thinking about jbing my PW1. I've used it a bunch and never had a problem. Could be my virus software - I uninstalled the old 7-zip, turned off my shippy virus-be-ware, installed from the download link you gave me and it gave me no issues.

When I installed 7-zip in 2013 I had a different virus scanner that wasn't so difficult about common apps. I want protection, but what I don't need is a steel-door vault closing down everything I try to do and blocking me at every turn.

@eschwartz - if I didn't do the updating thing after doing the JB thing - the updating is related to really needing the collections that Amazon offers - I know I could have the Collections Mgr hack, but are they as good, with covers, etc.? I'm weak, I know, but I love seeing the covers instead of a line of text.

Cover view is present on the earliest PW firmwares (and backported to the Touch ), it hasn't changed since.

The collections do not have covers, they render the name and count in a box, similar to books without covers.

Thank you. That's what I was afraid of and why I take my devices up to the best current update that includes collections. I was really hoping the collection manager hack would give me the best of both worlds.

I am confused, are you saying Collections will show, say, a picture of the series the collection is based on? Where does it get the picture, for example?

I am unaware of any difference between the firmware versions that would affect this. Upgrading should not get you any additional utility.

In fact, the only difference I am aware of between the older and newer versions is the addition of Cloud Collections, which may not be a good thing.

I agree. Cloud Collections sucks on so many levels, however, with cloud collections came "book cover" display as opposed to text line only display - and maybe I'm remembering wrong (nope, just checked and my K3/KK has collections, but text only, no covers display).

When I downgraded my PW1 to 5.3.4.2 and upgraded all the way through 5.3.9, it was text only collections, no covers, and no option for anything else that I could see - this was working fast so I could have missed it. Once I went to 5.4.4.1 the covers were back and so were CCs. 5.4.4.1 was my choice because it was to me the most stable fw that included collections and covers display. Right after that fw update is when my PW1 started messing up. I'm a photographer, very visual, and I just want my collections to show the covers. Now that it's back to 5.4.4.1 and has JB, I am one happy camper and all the issues smoothed right out. 5.4.4.2 was a bad, bad update for me.

Who knows, maybe I'm a bit looney, or had a beer, or whatever, but this was my experience when downgrading and then doing JB. That's why I upgraded after JB and what I want from the Collections Manger hack. No covers displaying on home page, then I won't be quite as happy.

Am I'm missing something here with regards to earlier fws? Thanks again!

The Kindle PW1 should also have the cover view menu option. It was released as a backport to the Touch in fw5.3.2, and IIRC had first appeared in the very first PW release on fw5.3.0 or thereabouts.

I remember I was really excited about that (the backport to the Touch), way back month or so after the PW1 was released. It was a whole song-and-a-dance too -- somehow the entire search index got corrupted in the process, which I eventually discovered with the help of Amazon CS.

Well, whatever the case, I am very happy atm. If for some reason I decide to downgrade again I will check for the covers along the way. It didn't show me anything but text when I downgraded to 5.3.4.2 which was my earliest fw and I used my personal Amazon download for the downgrade, in fact all of the fws used were my own with the exception of 5.3.9 which I downloaded here just to see if it had cover view before I went all the way back to 5.4.4.1. I always backup my devices before doing anything and I had downloaded all of those from Amazon as soon as released and upgraded myself. I think that's why I was so shocked about the "wifi off update".

Sorry to hear about your issues with the touch. Hopefully everything's ironed out by now.

It's a puzzler with regards to my fws and I guess it will stay that way for now. Off to bed now. Have a good one!

It was slightly under two years ago. I just deleted the indexes and restarted. It is the only problem I had in all three years I have had it, which is pretty good.

Anyway, there are your options, and if ever have reason to downgrade, be sure to confirm.

But if you are happy now, the way it is, I suppose that is the important thing.
