Plus, i have some weeks i spend 8 hours everyday in the lab and i listen to them the whole time, since i don't have to make or receive calls or write reports or read papers or build mathematical models, etc... It actually makes my lab days quite enjoyable.

That's an awfully narrow way of looking at things. I read, I listen to music and podcasts, watch movies, all sorts of other activities, and I don't think any of that is contradictory. Plus I spend quite a bit of time in my car, time I obviously can't spend reading (and I don't like audiobooks), so podcasts are perfect for that.

Not necessarily literary, but WNYC Leonard Lopate's radio show, which is a podcast on itunes and on WNYC's website, is very good. He often interviews authors of both fiction and non-fiction.
It is also live on WNYC-FM weekdays at noon for two hours. The podcasts are of the individual interviews of various lengths (20-40 min.). Last edited by mlewis78; 10-31-2014 at 03:59 AM. |

Thanks all. To clarify, I meant podcasts about books but that was mainly so I wouldn't get too flooded. My plan is for a podcast about the fantastic, probably mostly literature but also other things, spoken language Swedish. I could easily do it in English (I'm bilingual) but since there is almost nothing on the subject in Swedish (except the great Fantastisk podd http://fantastiskpodd.se/ but that's about writing) and lots in English... I thought I'd name it Mare Fantastica

I used to get the Writer's Almanac.
The only regular ones I get now are Nerdist (who very occasionally will get authors, like George RR Martin) and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, which is distributed as a "podcast," but is more just a radio game show distributed that way than something to give an idea of what people are doing in the podcast medium/genre. I'll listen to others on a one-off basis if they sound interesting or have a good guest. |

The fact that podcasts can be done by anyone with a microphone and an Internet connection, while radio broadcasts typically require professionals in professional facilities is really just a wonderfully enabling side effect, not a defining characteristic. Many radio shows are both a broadcast and a podcast, for real and in truth. All podcasters would likely prefer their content was indistinguishable from a professional commercial radio broadcast. But it's very easy to put out garbage. Podcasting is the audio equivalent of ebook self-publishing. Both Patrick Modiano and John E. Literate can do it. I was about to add that podcast to the thread. I'd characterize his podcasts as following (hoping I didn't miss something): - book/article interviews - a quick way to discover and filter new reading - Arts, etc. (music, plays, fashion, art, food, ...) - most often NYC-centric - "Please explain ..." - detail into some subject, like "Please explain: Wool" - The Gurus of How-to - Q&A with home repair experts. Leonard Lopate seems to be aware of the subject of the interview, like he or his staff have read the books and articles. He puts out about 20 podcasts per week. Podcasts make it easy to quickly decide on interest level, and simply skip to the next. |

FYI, HarryT placed my following post in the Lounge: CAR TALK's Tom "Don't Drive Like My Brother" Magliozzi died 3 November 2014, at 77. (Thanks, HarryT, for placing it where you feel it's most appropriate.) If interested, please come discuss it there.
