I gave a Kobo Wifi to my son's mother in law. Tried to give my other Kobo wifi away a coworker but she insisted on paying $40 because it was loaded with 2,000 books. After using touch screen e-readers I seldom used the non touch screen e-readers. Resisted buying front light readers.

Well, it was still available and in as good of condition as advertised. The seller drove almost all the way to my house (to a Starbucks) and insisted on giving me $5 change when I told him $60 would be fine (it was advertised at $55). It's basically brand new, with box and all literature. I'm still charging it, but I've played with a little while charging. I like the screen a lot. Actually I like the Kobo Glo quite a bit, except for the width of the bottom margin. Starting to get used to it.

(Removed Craigslist link because it's been deleted by the seller.)

So now I'll see how I like the Kobo "world." Thanks for all the information, advice, etc.

I can't argue with that. It looks really good. I haven't compared it with my other eReaders yet, probably won't have much time tomorrow either.

Congratulations. I hope you like it as much as I like mine. Good price. I think the Glo is just about perfect. If you are not on 3.11.0, do feel free to upgrade. That firmware version is the best yet.

I like it so far. When I first plugged the Glo in to charge it said "updating" -- and I didn't know how to stop it so I let it go. It did a lot of screen blinking and than rebooted. Then it said it was updating again, but stopped the process saying the battery was too low to update. When I plugged it in to a wall charging cable -- when a battery is low, sometimes my USB port on my computer doesn't have enough juice to charge -- I think it said something about updating again, but (apparently) it only got up to 3.8.0 (if it upgraded at all). I've synced it a couple times and it hasn't tried to update again. Is there a way to force it?

(I guess I should search the forums.)

You can sideload it. The link is here.

You want this one:
Mark 4 Hardware: Aura HD/Glo and TouchLC (Low Cost -N905C Model).
90.5 MB - 92,698 KB - 94,922,390 bytes

Make sure when you do it that you unzip the file, and drop the three files that you unzipped into the .kobo file (dot kobo). You can have a lot of fun (NOT) if you drop it in the root directory by mistake. (Yes, me).

Or you can wait til it rolls out to you from Kobo. That would require you to connect wifi periodically and hope it's your turn.

I got it. Searched all over Google and then found it right here.

Now I understand the process. I guess when the file is 90 Megs, Kobo wants to limit how many can download at once.

Fortunately I found the instructions -- also right here on MobiRead -- and copied the files to the .kobo directory as instructed. All went well. My only disappointment was that I thought I would get the "turn off headers and footers" feature (as shown in a screenshot in the 3.11.0 thread), but now I realize that that is dependent on the device. Ryzir is using an H2O.

Meant to say, "thanks again."

I believe it's not actually a stock feature on any device. You can fix it by adding a line to the config file. I would have to search around to find the info, it's somewhere here on MR.

I don't think it is this. Kobo should be able to handle the downloading of the firmware to everyone who connects.

The delays are too much to account for trying to keep the load off the servers. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for the firmware to become available in Australia. Which is one of the reasons I started the Direct
Links to Kobo Firmware
thread.

It's entirely possible that the server load issue was a problem in the distant past, and the staged rollout is just inertia.

Another theory is that the staged rollout uses the early updaters as guinea pigs for any problems that the beta testers didn't find. There have been a number of releases that have been pulled shortly after being rolled out.

Also in the past we were told they had to get approval from partners in different geographical areas, so staged upgrades based on that too.

I'll search for that setting (or tweak). The big margins (top and bottom) is my main nitpick with my Glo. Thanks.

Then it's you I need to personally thank for the update. Thank you. You might be right about purposely rolling updates out slowly so there are "beta testers." It would make sense (in its own way).

Speaking of partners -- there's a file in my Kobo (Affiliate something or other), with one name, I think it's "Family Christian Bookstore" but I could have the order of the words wrong. Does that mean the Kobo was originally sold by them -- or, since this is the only dealer listed in the U.S. -- do all Kobos sold in the U.S. come with this file? It's not really an important question for any reason, but I'm curious.

Yes that is what that means. It came from them, and you may even get a Bible downloaded when you connect, even though it was used.

I had gotten a new Glo from Powell's, and it has no such affiliation.

You're right -- actually three separate Bibles (I had wondered where they came from). Two of them are relatively expensive by eBook standards, $17 and $27. I wonder how the Family Christian Bookstore can do that?

When I lived in Washougal (on the Washington side of the Columbia River, just north of Portland), Powell's was one of my favorite places to go. It would have never occurred to me that they sell (or sold) Kobos. (Of course, when I lived there, Kobos didn't exist.)
