The problem with that statement is that there are advantages to use kepub over epubs. And to be honest, there are probably as many issues with epubs as there are with kepubs.

Plus Josieb1 is using an unfinished/unreleased feature in the firmware. Bugs like this probably explain why it isn't official.

That is very likely. If it is happening when you use "Document Default", it probably means that the epub has an embedded font. Choosing another font, or removing the embedded font will probably fix it.
