I once came across an epub reader, I forget where, that had the alarming option to "use publisher options" (i.e. take notice of the book's style-sheet) or NOT!!
Well, I keep TELLING customers it's basically "text poured into a bucket" :-) |

Just TODAY, I was snarling aloud at the computer, saying unprintable things about NookPress and their "Nook for Web" upload preview, which has a customer of ours completely convinced that the dog ate her fonts and the title on her title page has become SCRUNCHED (because you can set "publisher defaults," BUT...it doesn't display the FONTS. So the leading is wrong, of COURSE, but, to get it that way, you have to choose "publisher defaults" that AREN'T. Can you hear me screaming now?) Hitch |

Almost all readers for the windows platform I come across either ignore the included stylesheet or ignore it for the bigger part. Mind you, even the simple stylesheets. I haven't come across a reader that I liked yet.

Which ePub readers for Windows ignore the stylesheet?

That's if you're creating/converting ebooks sensibly, not trying to emulate the "Three Men in a Boat" demo in cross-platform formats of course! |

I don't count ADE, Kobo, B&N and Kindle apps. Just a normal book reader I can use on my windows tablet. I tried Book Bazaar, Freda and BookVisor (I think) and many others. They are either too rudimentary or ignore stylesheets. I am not talking about complicated stylesheet-fu here, but even rudimentary things like centering a header, slight change in font for a header, indent, etc. Very disappointing.

No, but those don't really work nice on a tablet. ADE is mediocre at best and I don't like the store tie-ins with the rest. I just want a simple plain reader with touch control that honors stylesheets. And no, I don't want to install Calibre on my tablet.

If all you want is a square group Did you define .top2 { } and .poem{ } (and link them in the <styles> section or stylesheet? |

Then, you are doing something wrong. Did you modify the top-margins for top2 and poem? The client for whom we did this wanted more "air" between his lines than you likely do, but trust me: the coding works. If it doesn't, you have either done something wrong in the stylesheet or in the HTML. Did you use the styling I gave you, or did you CHANGE it? If you want "single line spacing" between the lines, you'll have to modify the top-margin, if memory serves. Did you do that? And if you'll read the thread, you'll see that there are some devices that won't honor the <b/>, that's the reason. Hitch |

Aldiko, BTW, is one of my favorite epub readers on android tablets. We have a canned instruction to send to our authors who, previewing their books on Aldiko, send us frantic emails saying, e.g. "All the italics are GONE!!!" We usually only have to send it once. Oh, and I gotta say I LOVE my job as a "bookmaker" (I presume you mean an e-book creator, rather than Vinnie down at the pool hall) for a publisher that does mostly fiction, seldom poetry, and almost never requires tables. We've had few compliments, *ahem*, and so far no major complaints about the formatting. We try to comply with the ADE-compliant readers, of course, and all the Kindles in so far as possible (Kindle for iPhone is a ... challenge) and most major readers. But if someone complained about it not working on their rare, unobtainium reader, I guess it'd be "Xin loi" and "All the best. Bye." Life is too short.
