I can appreciate that. I very much prefer the cooler, blue screen. To the point I am hesitant to order the H2O.. With Kobo, I am not sure I could get a replacement or refund if I don't like the screen light color..

Different cameras tint the colors differently. Different screens show colors very differently. We perceive colors differently in general. This means that to make it useful we need to be able to see it in contrast to something.

One very easy way is to always take the picture next to a standard A4/letter white copy/print paper, which usually is a standard neutral white. That way we can compare the differences between e-readers and photos.

It would be great if that could be a sort of standard when showing e-readers via photos.

A yellow tint to the led lights can be considered acceptable so long as it's within certain visual tolerances, we have all seen this with various ereaders, but as the manufacturers can't produce ereaders to a consistent standard it does tend to be pot luck if you get a screen you like or one you don't. These ereaders are too expensive to just accept a screen that seems in the purchasers eye to be unacceptable.

Also the screen should be, especially the Carta screen that the H20 and the Kindle PW2 have, the same colour all over.

Mine was not, and that's how it was reported and accepted as faulty by Argos.

No one can tell someone that their screen is acceptable when they think it's not, it's only their opinion. They can advise, but at the end of the day it's the purchasers perception that matters.

I should have stated it more clearly but I was referring to the front light. When on at any setting, it does not have any yellow tint. None. I have posted pictures in a few other threads showing this.

In the reviews I've read I don't see yellow tint either. Adding the two together I figured there must be a flaw with some of the screens. Early adopters sometimes run into issues.

I would just like to emphasize that it was just my opinion that it should be returned.

Your comment, "mine is nice and white" gives me hope.

My challenge is that I can't view the H2O beforehand as my local independent bookstore does carry Kobo, but not the H2O. The last time I tried Best Buy they wouldn't even let me open the Kobo mini box so that doesn't seem to be an option either.

So I am left to the chance that I get a white screen or I get Kobo's famously mercurial customer service to let me return the unit if it's yellow..

hmmmm.

I spoke to Kobo today and they are telling me that a device can be returned within 30 days without any reason needed. I am actually waiting for them to confirm it in writing as I am not sure I believe them. If I get anything I'll let you know.

Well, that could be very good news. Thanks for keeping me informed as to what happens.

If you don't mind me asking, are you having Kobo send a new unit or are you asking for a refund?

The Argos store I bought my H20 from refunded me in the store. I've ordered my replacement from them online as the stores near me won't have any for at least a week.

I haven't chanced ordering from Kobo direct yet as I want their refund policy in writing first.

A simple image search tells us which color the front light should look like.
Google Images on Kobo H2O review
The color should be white and not yellowish, redish or blueish.
Off course the white color will vary (slightly) between brands, models and/or individual units.

IMO, the frontlight should be
  • white, and
  • evenly distributed across the screen, and
  • no clouding (especially at screen edges)
If a unit doesn't match the above guidelines it is probably a faulty unit.
It is up to the owner of the unit to judge if the deviations from the standard or norm bothers him or her. Get it either replaced or keep the unit.

Trouble with that is that the automatic white balance of most cheap cameras will make the screen look white no matter what colour it really is. If you're taking a picture, you should use a DSLR and calibrate the white balance against a white sheet of paper.

Yes, great. Those images meet my screen color expectations. What a beautiful, crisp and clean screen. Thanks for posting that.

I certainly am much closer now to trying the H2O but would like to see what Josieb1 comes up with from Kobo.

Well said Harry T. All along I've been a bit leary about the camera distortion factor. Is what I am seeing the actual color or a manufactured-by-process color mage..

Ahhh, technology both gives and takes...

Ha! I agree. For me, it's the one place I can go to connect with ereading nuts like myself.

My family and friends are amused by my ereader collection and ebook obsession.

It is comforting and fun to be in the presence of others that take the color of the lighted Kobo screen as seriously as I do..

May we all live long enough to enjoy the perfect ereader (yet to come) and finish all our TBR lists..

And I would say (and did even before comparison with my H2O) that my HD definitely leans to blue. There is variation in the manufacturing process even before you bring in differences in peoples colour perceptions. Key is if you like what you have or not, not what colour it is or what is right or wrong.
