(Yes, I have an actual list of books I am concurrently reading.)

Do people really waste time ranking their TBR when they could be reading it?
Sure. One thing I like to do is scan my TBR list all the way through, marking the books that strike my fancy, then move books around on that list. It lets me stack series with a book in between so I don't get burned out on the series. It also lets me alternate fiction and history. My TBR list is about 100 long now, so if I don't shake it up every so often, books get pushed to the bottom of the list and forgotten. There is a method to my madness. It may not be a sane method, but it is a method.

pwalker, you captured my thought process near perfectly. I have a similar method to mix in non fiction with fiction and to avoid over exposure to a series. If I read more than one book in a series in a row, I burn out. I need to mix a different book or even a different genre.. Without even realizing it, I was operating much as you but without realizing it.

The other thing I do is to switch from Kobo to Kindle and then back again. Alternating devices is also fun- whenever I return to a device I havent used for a few days or a week, it makes the reading seem fresh and new.

Well, I am usually good so long as it is a book I am interested in. Obviously, certain authors are instantly placed in the currently-being-read list...

I don't burn out from reading multiple books in a series. In fact, when I first met the Discworld books, I think I read at least a dozen of them, straight.

My TBR list consists of all those books I own/possess but which I have not yet read. I also have a wishlist and a "currently reading" list. Like others, I will tend to have at least 3-4 books open at any one time. I move back and forth between them based on medium (audio vs eBook vs paper book) and mood.

In addition to these lists, I also have one or more challenge lists. This year, my only challenge is to complete selected series. I am down to only 3 more books -- all from the Honor Harrington series.

Well, I don't read much non-fiction, but I do mix up genres. Right now I'm reading a mystery/suspense, high fantasy, YA fantasy, and a historical mystery novel. When I am enjoying a series, I will try to read through it without much delay. However, this year I'm trying to obtain most books through the library, so that can complicate pursuing a series since often I must wait for a book to become available.

Can't wait to dive in after a couple other horror novels.

There are some series that I can read one right after the other. The problem is that it's rare for me to find a series that I haven't read that has a significant number of books. I zipped through Griffin's Marine Corp series one after the next. Usually, when I'm reading a series, it's more re-reading the series, so I don't really have the what happens next drive that a fresh series would give me. It's one of the down sides to having read SF&F since the mid 70's.

Short response to the forum topic ("What book on your TBR list are you looking forward to the most?"):

The next books in each of the series I'm reading for pleasure, namely: The Fear, in Charlie Higson's post-apocalyptic horror series "The Enemy", and Tracker followed by Bloodline, in Jack Rollins' techno-thriller series "SIGMA Force". As soon as I finish those, I look forward to reading some nonfiction books on my TBR list, which I haven't yet placed in my "in queue TBR" list.

I am thinking: Current, TBR, Almost to TBR, and Hope to One Day Get There. That gives me four layers. Of course part of the fun will be discovering new books and placing them in one of the lists as well as periodically going thru and jostling the lists, moving books around. Like you said, changing of the mood could change the book's status.

How much fun can I have in a day! grin...
Long response to desert dog (and others' related) posts about managing one's "reading flow":

At any given time, I'm typically reading 3-4 books (and various case studies and periodicals) for work and 1-2 books for pleasure. As mentioned above, I'm currently reading my way through two different fiction series for pleasure.

I use a combination of Goodreads and the Appgenix "Business Tasks" app to manage my reading flow. In Goodreads, the "currently reading", "in queue to be read", "to read", and "to reread" categories are self-explanatory. However, as the number of books in the latter two categories is constantly growing, managing those last two TBR lists might be a Sisyphean task w/o "Business Tasks". "Business Tasks" helps me keep track of:
  • Deadlines - if any - by which I must (or want to) complete specific chapters or entire books
  • Library books I've placed on hold (and at which of the multiple libraries I patronize*) and my place in queue for each book
  • Due dates for ebooks and the rare paper copy library books I've checked out
  • The lineup of titles in a series and which title I'm currently reading

Sounds like more work than it is; the method (which somewhat resembles a class syllabus) works quite smoothly. It's especially helpful for me because - as someone upthread mentioned - I like to read series straight through, but library waiting lists for popular books require one to plan ahead to obtain desired titles when one wants to read them as well as to finish on time books that cannot be renewed, because others have them on hold.

*I didn't take all these pains (for books I read for pleasure) before acquiring a NOOK in December 2011. However, upon getting a NOOK, I've joined (or renewed memberships at) multiple library systems in order to more easily obtain content I want when I want it. That's easy to do in downstate New York, where one qualifies for library cards in the counties/boroughs where one lives/works/attends school/pays taxes, as well as at the easy-to-get-to Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens(borough) Library by virtue of living/working/going to school in/paying taxes in New York State.

Pretty much all the books that are stacking either in my shelves or in my e-readers. When I'm done reading a book I randomly pick a new one depending on my mood of the moment. All books I have I want to read so I don't really have any that takes precedence over the others.

I don't really have a TBR list, at least not recorded somewhere. I do have a list of books I've read, I'm reading and I haven't read yet. You could say the "unread" list is my TBR list, but that's not really correct. It only means I've not read the ebook yet, but I could have read another version (either audio or paper).

I'm one of those people that has multipe books open at the same time, I read books depending on my mood. I also reread my books often. So when I do buy a new book, it's because I want to read it and most often I'll start reading it immediately.

(I have two columns in my Calibre library: "Status" (unread, reading, read) and "Year Read" (list of years).)

I'm most looking forward to David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks, but first I'm reading through his previous five novels. I had read and enjoyed Cloud Atlas and was planning to read The Bone Clocks when it was released last month, but upon reading reviews I learned that there were interesting connections between various minor characters in all his books, forming a kind of "Mitchellverse." Being somewhat of a completist, I decided to read through rest of his novels in chronological order. I'm almost through rereading Cloud Atlas with two more to go before I start The Bone Clocks. I've greatly enjoyed all his work so far; I think he's one of the best writers of our time.

I am doing exactly the same thing, for exactly the same reason. I read Cloud Atlas and loved it, so before I read Bone Clocks, I am reading through his other published works. Just finished Black Swan Green, and while coming-of-age stories aren't really my thing, BSG was actually pretty good.

I tend to "purchase" a lot of free Amazon books, mostly classics but some self-published, but I have yet to read most of them. That's something I hope to do soon. Of the books I have paid for that are on my TBR list, the one I am looking forward to the most, is the second book in the Harry Dresden series, "Fool Moon."
