I used to read the Dirk Pitt novels. And regardless of the ridulousness of some I did enjoy them. Vixen 03, Night Probe, etc. I was turned on to them by a friend who was a classic car fiend.

However...

when the author stops caring about which characters are dead in his own novels it is time to move on.

I forget the title, but the last Cussler/Pitt novel I read was the one in which Dirk Pitt finally married his long time girlfriend, Loren I think? Now, the problem with this was that Loren's father walked her down the aisle. That would have been a bit difficult since her father's body was found at the bottom of a lake in the novel that introduced Loren!!!

I don't remember if it was the same book or the one before, but Cussler for some reason decided that the love interest in the first book (first written anyway) somehow survived her obvious death (underwater explosion) and gave birth to twins (though they had very limited interaction in the book so how she ended up pregnant is still a mystery) and never told their father and they just show up all the sudden.

Those later books are total cluster*f*s.

My (limited) understanding is that the process involves storks and gooseberry bushes.

I remember that Cussler was asked about it in an interview and he went with immaculate conception.

It's actually the risen-from-the-dead father of Loren that bugs me more. I mean, body found dead in the bottom of a lake as part of the plot of the book (Vixen 03)...and then suddenly he's alive and attending his daughter's wedding.

Just...no.

Anyway....haven't wasted my time on a Cussler book since.

It's not just you. Clive Cussler leaves me cold too.
