I have iOS8.2 on my iPad mini. I checked this afternoon with another ebook I had designed and tested some time ago, and in which the images were centered. The images were left aligned. I think the problem is with iBooks, not iOS.

8.2 or 8.0.2? Current non-beta is 8.1 which was just released Monday. And yes, the problem is with iBooks but now that iBooks is a built in app with iOS, you can only get an update of iBooks when they release a new update of iOS. Thus the suggestion to check since they just updated.

You are perfectly correct on both counts.

Launceston is a long way away from Apple headquarters, so the iOS8.1 upgrade did not arrive till this afternoon.

After installing my iPad mini now centres images just as it did before the latest round of upgrades - without any changes needed to the CSS.

Thanks again.

I would argue that it is a mistake, just a mistake made when they authored the broken specification.

I suspect that when they wrote that, they meant to allow the zeroing behavior defined in the CSS spec, not for readers to just ignore "auto". But as usual, if you give them an inch....

The good news is that I'm not seeing that text in EPUB 3, so perhaps someday soon, we'll be rid of that brain damage.
