Sure - completely appreciate that. As I said, though, I asked at my local Argos whether returning it would be a problem (not that I have any intention of returning it) and the girl I asked said no, so there doesn't seem to be a consistent policy.

Your not the only one who was told returning the kobo wasn't a problem, I've heard others say the same, it only appears to be me that's been told no, multiple times.

No doubt they have me on a list someone where now

Yes it's the inconsistency that is the worst. I bought my H2O feeling fairly safe as I had a chat transcript confirming the eligibility of the H2O as well as a screen shot of their website without the exclusion symbol. As it happened, my screen is perfect, as far as I can see anyway, and I am very happy with it.

A possibility may be to go into Argos and ask to see the H2O. I have done this with other items in the past and they get the item out and open it for you to handle before purchasing. Although you wouldn't be able to register the device, you should be able to check the screen for pinholes at least, and with no obligation to purchase.

Yes, that's what I checked, too. All the "excluded" items on the web site are marked with a "cross" symbol following the name. Eg:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/1586884.htm

But the H2O is not:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/3098394.htm

In fact NONE of the bookreaders that Argos sell seem to have the "Excluded" symbol.

Just in case this helps anybody thinking of buying from Argos, this is the transcript of the online chat I had with them. You may wish to try one yourself for more peace of mind if purchasing.

Thanks, Lyn - that's very helpful. It's clearly NOT present on the website for any of the bookreaders that Argos sell, whereas it is there for things like digital cameras and MP3 players.

Thanks very much Lyn, I've taken a copy of that in case I need it.

I'm no legal expert but it's hard to see how Argos would have a legal leg to stand on to stop you asking for your money back as long as you order online, choose home delivery rather than store pick-up and treat the product/packaging carefully. The combo of Consumer Contracts Regulations and Argos not specifically excluding the H2O from 30-day money-back at time of purchase seems pretty safe to me. Putting my money where my mouth is, I've decided to risk it. Let's hope I'm not feeling like a gullible idiot within the next few days!

@HarryT,
I'm just curious, HarryT, but I've often seen you post that text/screen customisation is of little value to you. What features of the AuraH2O did appeal to you? It seems an unusual product choice for someone who has been such a vocal supporter of all-things-Kindle in the past.

The 6.8" Carta screen. Having been very happy with my Onyx T68, which has the older 6.8" Pearl screen, the extra size compared to a 6" reader is significant.

Ah, OK How are you liking it compared to the Onyx T68?

Good luck Josieb1 if you do decide to give the Aura H2O a try, but what you've posted as your experience from Argos is pretty much exactly my experience when considering the Aura from WH Smith (including it being down to the individual stores discretion). I was told that the reason for this was that once opened, they could no longer sell it and and would have to return it to Kobo, and they in turn would only accept returns from WH Smith with obvious faults.

With the Aura I was more concerned about the reported scratches along the top of the screen, and how good the quality of the light was, both seemingly inherent in the design of the Aura to widely varying extents, so therefore not something that would be obviously considered a fault. I really fancied trying the Aura, but took the safe option of the PW2 instead.

At least with the H20 there shouldn't be any reason for you not liking it... but when you are spending £140 it's hardly unreasonable to expect that it meets your expectations, and if not, you can get a refund.

I'm trying to sit on my hands and wait for the demo models in WHSmith. I have the 6 inch Aura which I do like for its small size and when I compared the Aura against the HD I prefered the Aura so i'd be silly buying the H20 sight unseen. I know everyone complains about the Aura screen but personally I don't have any issue reading on it.

I've also ordered the new Kindle Voyage so I think if I do keep that I won't need the H20, however if I don't keep that then the H20 is much more an option for me. Hopefully by November WHSmith will have their act together.

Thanks, Josie. Me, too! It's supposedly due on Thursday. Can't wait

I was supposed to be waiting for some nice cases to be available before hitting the 'Buy' button ... but something went wrong

Just thought I'd report back. Ordering online from Argos was painless and the H2O was delivered exactly when they said it would be - ordered Tues PM delivered Thurs PM, free postage. There are no defects (lighting or otherwise) that I can see, so hopefully I won't need to test the returns procedure

I will just add that there was no paperwork delivered with the device, just a note on the package label which says 'This label should be kept as proof of purchase' so don't be hasty disposing of the wrapping. The label also says 'This item can be returned to your local store'.
