Actually I understand Hitler did have some skill at drawing. I saw an episode of Ripley's believe it or not yrs ago that showed some of his work. He failed the exam to get in for some reason. Maybe if he hadn't he wouldn't have chosen the career he did. I get your point though. Some say it wasn't Lizzie but her sister who did it. I guess we'll never know. Probably Jack wouldn't get so much press even now if we knew for sure who he was. They did a reconstruction on computer of what his London looked like and it seems he escaped notice by having the Devil's own luck. People literally missing catching him by mere minutes and so forth.

Those were all real people. A more appropriate place to start for an analogy might be a Loki activity book. Or perhaps Hades, or Nyx, or Set, or Dracula, or Voldemort.

Doesn't matter. They have come to represent evil. We're not talking here about a scholarly treatise, but a perverse attempt to appeal to children.

But they don't want to appeal to children. It is a political protest. Maybe you should read the complete story behind this? This is not thought to convert children to satanism.

Though I would assume most "Satanists" are simply protesting mainstream religions, taking a look at the "Theistic Satanism" page on Wikipedia shows that there are some groups who take it quite seriously as a religion - and seem to promote generally positive values (personal development, seeking knowledge, etc.) and the character of Satan in their beliefs is quite different from the villain of the Abrahamic religions (though it can be assumed is the same character that appears in those stories only - according to their beliefs - deliberately mischaracterized and misrepresented).

If the Satan of these satanic religions is the mischaracterized and misrepresented Satan of Abrahamitic religions, then does that mean there is no Satan (insomuch as Satan is a term for that Big Evil) and therefore they're not really Satanists?

In a way, yes. Anton LaVey was an atheist and chose the name "Satanist" to mean that he was an adversary of the church in the way that Satan was an adversary in the Bible. While there are probably people that call themselves Satanists and try to somehow worship Satan as an entity, adherents to the Church of Satan are universally atheists.

As Anton LaVey explained in his classic work The Satanic Bible, Man—using his brain—invented all the Gods, doing so because many of our species cannot accept or control their personal egos, feeling compelled to conjure up one or a multiplicity of characters who can act without hindrance or guilt upon whims and desires. All Gods are thus externalized forms, magnified projections of the true nature of their creators, personifying aspects of the universe or personal temperaments which many of their followers find to be troubling. Worshipping any God is thus worshipping by proxy those who invented that God. Since the Satanist understands that all Gods are fiction, instead of bending a knee in worship to—or seeking friendship or unity with—such mythical entities, he places himself at the center of his own subjective universe as his own highest value.

Edit: I missed that you were talking about "theistic" Satanists. In that sense, "Satan" only came to mean "the big Evil" in later Judaism and Christianity. When he was referred to in the earlier Bible/Torah (Job, for example), "satan" seems to have beeen more of a job title ("the adversary") than a proper name. So I would expect that those Satanists are worshipping an entity that they believe is in opposition to God, rather than simply being "evil".

I agree.

I read the Wikipedia article and several other pages that came up with a Google search to see if I could figure out what it is they actually believe. My conclusion is that the theistic Satanists seem to be rather poor at any theology, Christian, Jewish, pagan or otherwise.
