Yes, it's the only Kindle model which had a user-replaceable battery. (And the only one with an SD card slot, of course.)

I still have my K2 US, but it's in the old electronic devices box in the closet.

My Kindle three died an untimely death and had to be replaced with my newer paper white, sometimes I wish I still had it. in other words it bit the dust.

All members wanting to post are invited to expand upon the idea of nostalgia and to talk about other ebook readers, if you wish.

As a Moderator, I may also elect to move this thread out of the Kindle forum if the thread becomes generic in discussion, as now intended (and which may also necessitate a change in the Subject heading).

Have fun!

Why do you guys keep old devices? Whenever I no longer use a device I just sell it. More money, no more useless objects.

My three was great it worked perfectly, the only draw back was it did not have a book light. My kindle three filled the function that it was bought for very well, was a little bit big but it was great next to the one that came before it. Going to talk strictly about my Amazon readers. I had other brands of readers but since this is in the Amazon section I will talk to amazon products.

My 1st Kindle was a K3. I am on my 3rd one of that model. The 1st accidentally got its screen broken and when I bought the replacement (my warranty had already run out on the 1st) it turned out to have some OS problems so I sent it back for exchange. I rarely use it now as I have been reading on my PaperWhite since I got it after the Winter Contest a few yrs back. 1st Gen of PW and still going strong. There is a slight mark on the screen that is either a very small crack or a scratch (I think a scratch) so that there is a small thin area where the screen is brighter but overall it's in tip top shape yet. I did use a K2 prior to getting my 1st K3 though. I borrowed it from the public library and was instantly hooked on the Kindle.

In my case? Idiocy. I hang onto things until they are unusable/worthless. I'm trying to be better.

It is a good question overall. For me though, by the time I got the next kindle, after K1, it would not have been worth a lot of money. I got the K1 in 2008 and then got the K3 in 2010. So it was already 2 generations behind by then. I did like the K3, the screen had much better contrast, but I still used the K1 at the time and shared the K3 with a family member.

I held on to it mostly though because I just like it. It was the first e-reader for me and I am attached to it. I didn't read much at all in the 5 years leading up to getting the K1. My eyes just couldn't do the small and often yellow print of paperback anymore. I lost the joy of reading. When I got my K1, it was like someone turned the sun on again for me. I read 200 books on it in its first full year. I can't put that in words how much that meant to me.

So yeah, nostalgia. I do not feel any of that for my paperwhite for example. But the first, yeah.
I still have the pristine book shaped box it came in. The days before the flat box shipping and all that. It was just such a experience unpacking that thing.

And that magical bar it has still intrigues me to this day.

As to the battery, I replaced it twice. I wish all devices could do that. Its just unplug the old and plug the new one in under the back cover. The SD card is under there too.

I don't miss waiting 5 minutes for a search. Yep, 5 or more minutes. I had 1000's of books on it at the time.

I would like to know more about other e-readers that were out before the kindle. I had never heard of e-readers before I heard of the Kindle right before Oprah had it on her show. I missed the coupon at the time, it was expensive and I had to save up.

But who used e-readers around here before that. I am curious how the e-book market looked like BK. What devices where out there, what screen did they use. Anyone still have those around?

I still have my old Franklin ebookman somewhere around here. It had a dot matrix type lcd screen, took 4 batteries that drained in about 4 hrs, and used the old kindle format. After Mobipocket.com stopped supporting it I put the thing away. I couldn't get new books to load and be readable on it after that.

LOL--I actually have two Franklin ebookmans (ebookmen?). I really enjoyed my first one and bought a "backup" unit when Fry's Electronics had them on sale for like $25. Read quite a few books on it. E-reading has come a long way since those days!

I spent a bit more for mine. I think it was about $40.00 via ebay. Still in the original packaging as I recall. I agree ereaders have improved a lot since those days.
