Sony did one better then Amazon. Yes, Amazon are supporting their older devices by keeping an obsolete format alive, but Sony shoehorned ePub into the PRS-500 so ALL Sony Readers supported ePub (anyone that did not get his/her 500 updated, too bad as Sony offered the update for free). Then Sony could do away with the LRS/LRX formats and concentrate on ePub. Given that Sony could get ePub to work on a 500, I don't see why Amazon cannot get AZW3 to work on the older Kindles and then they could dump Mobi for good.

Curiously, even though it works in Safari in OS X v10.9, it doesn't work in iBooks. Digging through the binary, it looks like iBooks has a whitelist, and any CSS properties not on that whitelist don't make it through to the rendering engine.

The good news is that iBooks does support -webkit-shape-outside in OS X v10.10 and later.
