I'm not sure whether this result followed another attempt at a factory reset or not, but I recently increased the size of my font to about what it was before this problem started and - you guessed it - the freezing problem STOPPED!!! That, and the fact that the freezing can be better described as a "slow processing", makes me feel that the problem has to do with memory buffering. What makes it even more interesting is that my wife's Kobo Touch (same vintage and same books as mine) never had this freezing problem - (although it does have the "Annotation/Bookmark problem" that we've both been experiencing since updating to firmware 3.8) - AND THE FONT SHE USES IS LARGER THAN THE ONE I WAS USING WHEN I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. LOL, My Touch was operating fine until JUST AFTER I posted the above message. Then, you guessed it, it froze. Later when trying to see if it would freeze with another book - it did.

When I bought my Touch (N905B) it was freezing at every 15th or 20th pages for about a minute. Then it recognized my touches, and worked fine - for other twenty pages. It was really annoying
![]() Factory reset, update, recopying epub book, not helped. I thought it is a hardware problem, or just the sw is soooo untested. ![]() I have read somewhere, that freezes gone with 2.4 firmware, so I tried it. If you don't how to install other version firmware, here's how I did it (you can skip this if you are familiar with manual upgrades): I downloaded, factory reset the book, then connected to my mac. The official Kobo desktop sw copied the latest 3.11 again, but before unplug I overwrote it with 2.4 (copy firmware onto the .kobo hidden folder) then disconnected the device. It recognized that there's something to install, so installed the 2.4 firmware. So, with 2.4, FREEZES WERE GONE, WAS REALLY FINE. I have read about an hour without probs. Okay, but the software had less feature, and I have installed an ad supported version, so when I locked my device, it showed me ads, not my nice books. Mhhh.. I said I give it a try with 3.11 - but now, I was using a separatedly downloaded version, and as the same why I manually upgraded firmware, I upgraded to 3.11.0 (4d8eac1207, 10/16/14 to be exact). I did this 3 days ago, I have read almost 2 entire book (same book as before, same exact epub file) and it's working properly! ![]() I use the same features, same books, and now its good. So, don't be angry, it will work, just try to upgrade to this version manually. The version what Kobo desktop installed onto my book, was not working properly as I mentioned before - sounds bad, but it is true. I'm really looking forward to see a new update. |

Actually, I think the important step was the installation of FW2.4. The reason for this is what is in the firmware package.
For some reason Kobo has stopped putting kernel and uBoot image files in the firmware package for the N905 and N905B Touch. These were included in FW2.4. Doing a factory reset will install the original versions of these files. Then going straight to the current firmware doesn't change them. But, stepping through them does. So, my theory is that there is something missing in the factory reset version of the kernel that the latest firmware needs. And that kernel in FW2.4 does include it. The proof of this would be to do a factory reset and let it upgrade to 3.11.0. Then, if the problem reoccurs, reinstall the 3.11.0 but add the kernel files from 2.4.0. I don't expect you to do this, unless you are curious. What you should do is get cup or glass of your favourite drink, sit in your favourite chair and read a book. |

@davidfor: any easy means to tell what kernel you are using?

Off the top of my head, I don't know. I usually try to avoid messing around at the kernel level of things. My knowledge is just enough to get me into trouble. Or get me looks of "why don't you know that?" from the people I work with.

I can't help but wonder if some of the issues we see people having could be related to differing kernel levels.

I think so as well. The last time I checked, the code to install updated kernels was broken. The code in the factory reset image works, so a factory reset and update ends up with the correct kernel. Except for the Mark3 Touch, which doesn't have a kernel included in recent packages.

Nod... I'd found that. Presently working on packaging a mod to report on that.
