Kate, I saw the Trixie Belden books, but they were priced a lot more than what the others were.

Cherry Ames, unlike Nancy Drew, kind of need to be read sequentially, or at least, they read better that way. The books track her life starting from her time as a student.

Well .. not really. The stories are self-contained. While I always prefer to read any series in order, I don't think it's really necessary.

GA Russell, another series that you might be interested in for future gift-giving is Betsy-Tacy, by Maud Hart Lovelace. These follow friends from childhood to young adulthood, with the reading level also reflecting the progression in age.
