It was a bit of wrench giving up worrying about file systems, directory layouts, etc. but after a while, I found that I no longer miss them.

Since Koreader now supports using the Calibre metadata files for search as well, it makes Koreader easier for me to use without having to revert to the old method of searching down the directory tree for the ebook I want to read.

while it may take a few seconds(maybe longer for the 276 shelves I have) for collections/shelves to appear they are fast and easy to wander through once they come up. I have not waited more then 2mins. I must again point out this is an ereader not a computer device, or a tablet or a game system. It was not designed for speed, it was designed in fact for reading. Speed was not a consideration but battery life was, and to maximize battery life speed was throttled to ensure maximum battery life. And for the fact that most books are open and read 1 page at a time, for perhaps weeks at a time for some. You really don't need a speed demon to go 1 foot at a time.

When Kobo new firmware first had collections I went crazy putting 100 onto my Kobo. This slowed using collections almost to a stand still. Part of this was due to programing problem that was quickly fixed. But I never again used collections on my Kobo. For me Author search worked good enough.

My Sony T1 has 265 Collections from Calibra Tags. Is working great without problems or slowing down.

The shelf list performance is affected as much by how many books are on the shelves as by how many shelves there are. Adding one shelf with 1000 books on it seems to have as much affect as adding 20 or more empty shelves.

The other thing to do to avoid the magically multiplying shelves is to add "SyncShelves=false" into "ApplicationPreferences" section of the config file. That will prevent the shelves from syncing when syncing to the Kobo server.
