It would require about a 1000 lines of code to be tested and debugged.

Wow, interesting. How long would that take? If it would give us a more networkable version, maybe others would be interesting in sponsoring (via paypal) you to do the work.

Well writing it would take about a day, testing and debugging would need people to be willing to test and debug

Hehe, true. I would be willing to test and debug, as well as host MySQL databases if necessary. I would also be willing to sponsor a portion of the development effort.

Well for $500 I'm willing to commit to writing it and fixing the bug reports that people will generate from using it.

Hi Kovid - I'm just preparing to travel with a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB. I have the basic U3 (not using it) and installed the Portableapps thingy with a bunch of apps I like to use.
One of the major apps is (of course) your wonderful Calibre as I intend to buy a PRS-505. After following numerous threads on moving Calibre to my Thumb Drive, ![]() ![]() Is this procedure correct? am I missing something? ![]() |

The problem with that approach is that you will be storing your Calibre settings under your user Profile on the PC, and also relying on the drive letter that the USB stick is assigned.
Both of these can be set as discussed earlier in this thread so that they point to your USB stick - the library location via a command line parameter and the config data location via setting an environment variable. |

What I did to make a portable calibre on my usb drive is the following:
Create a bat file with the following contents @echo off set CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIRECTORY=%cd%\config cd calibre calibre.exe --with-library ..\calibre-db exit Copy calibre into the "calibre" folder. Your book database will be in the calibre-db folder and config files in calibre-db. You can start calibre from the bat file and it should just work. I still need to make a unix script for this but it should be very similar. |

I think this will do it on linux:
Code:
#!/bin/bash #Start Calibre as a portable app export CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIRECTORY=`pwd`/config cd calibre calibre --with-library ../calibre-db Quote:

Actually, it looks like this may well happen in the relatively near future. I'm currently working on refactoring calibre to make it storage backend independent. Once that's done, it should be relatively easy to implement.

If you are running Windows, have you tried using the "portable calibre.bat" file that is in the calibre resources folder? This approach has the advantage that it can be used with whatever is the latest release of calibre.
