True. I should have included that, but a credit card gift card that is not expired does appear as a credit card to them so it should work.

I also use gift cards with minimal balances at sites where I "buy" free digital content. However, that strategy failed when I tried to register for the Amazon Prime free trial; Amazon would only accept a card - even for the free trial - whose balance was sufficient to accommodate the full monthly subscription fee.

For international readers who weren't able to use B&N to get this before it expired last time, it's become free again @ Kobo (available to Canadians) & Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK) and is newly free @ B&N UK (still expired in the main store, though that may change).

I've updated the OP with the links as well. Grab it while it lasts!
