First, how are the prices on ibooks compared with amazon's prices? Second, as a dad of a nine year old I would make the son pay for the replacement.

Some of my own regrets: before I got my first kindle, I had two Aluratek Libra Pros, these proved to me that cheap eraders are often just that cheap and poor quality.

Solution to having multiple reader formats is to only use e-readers for books you check out with overdrive and only buy printed books. That is the only way to play by the rules they give you and not be limited. Unfortunately this does put an end to a lot of e-reading, so maybe if you really benefit preferring to read on an e-reader then this will not work well for you.

If the contract said I could convert the book to another format and back it up without DRM as long as I didn't distribute it then I'd buy e-books without as much hesitation. It took years to convince the music studios to sell music without DRM, but the eventually realized that people could steal the music if they wanted and they were just stopping people from making the purchase because of DRM anxiety.

I've asked before about how to start an overdrive public library. I wish people would do that. You could have libraries that specialize in genres and sell memberships. The Philadelphia free library sells a membership. The biggest problem with all-purpose libraries is lack of selection compared to e-book stores like Amazon which have much better selection.
