Wouldn't the Nook STR with Glowlight fit the bill? Or does it lose on "high resolution"?

Yes it does. It is not high resolution.

While it would be nice to have twice the storage, my PW2 is in great shape so I won't be upgrading.

My Kindle Touch is in great shape, and I'm happy with it.

Plus, the PW line is falling down in all sorts of ways RE:hacking.

The general idea about slowly shutting down the hacks is so that people get used to the reduced features. Then once an actual new model comes out (not just more storage) Amazon can sell the previous hacked features as new and native.

They already do that on the Paperwhite. The new dictionary lookup is much better now that is so easy to switch the dictionary. Little bit how jbpatches dictionary hack used to be. Custom fonts are disabled now (was never documented to begin with) - I take that as an indicator that the next FW or model will have an official custom fonts.

Anyway, I see no reason to upgrade my PW1 to anything PW2 (2 or 4 gb) unless there is significant upgraded specs such as higher resolution, smaller form factor or alternatively bigger screen with same form factor. Not giving up hope that we see a new model yet this year.

Is this a sure sign that there will not be a new model released this fall?

No I don't think so. If nothing new is released by the end of september - that would be a good sign that no new model comes out. Hard to imagine Amazon won't have something new the for christmas season.

It could be, but if that was the case I'd think they'd actually announce the change and promote it. This may just be them consolidating manufacturing as they sell through on the 2GB models instead of manufacturing a 2GB & 4GB model (assuming they plan for the US to get the 4GB model at some point if they reach sell through on the 2GB models before a new model would come out). Not announcing the change could mean that if there are 2GB models left for the US market when time comes for a new model that any remaining 2GB units will get shifted to the international market since not all places usually get the new model at the same time.

Book literacy and computer literacy are not necessarily the same thing. Many avid readers don't have the first clue about computers.

In my opinion whether you have 2 or 4GB of physical storage shouldn't really be a big issue, as we already have 5GB extra storage by default in the cloud reader. I believe all this storage is more than enough to carry around.

Except I hate the cloud and the archive. I never use them. Whispernet is never turned on on my kindle. I've got about 1000 ebooks. Trying to page through 100 pages of archive 1 at a time trying to locate the particular book I want would be ridiculous. I have them all sorted into 10 pages of collections, much easier to find that way on my kindle. Also the books as downloaded by Amazon don't have the titles, sometimes authors, and almost always pub date set to what I have changed them to in Calibre. I have the titles showing the series number, and the pub date changed so all series will be listed in the correct order and all together in my kindle. All that is messed up in the archived books.

Obviously though, in your case you'd need to have even more physical memory to carry around your huge library. Typically I just carry with me what I'm currently reading and some extra books in case I run out, specially when I'm traveling overseas. The rest of my library I keep it organized in my computers and Calibre, ready to load up into my ereaders whenever I want to.

My question is HOW do you get your books from Calibre into your kindle when away from home? Without using Amazon's Cloud? It's frustrating. Even if I have my entire Calibre library with me on a USB stick I can't find any way of getting a book from it into my Kindle away from home. I also have a Fire that I don't use and I can't install Calibre Companion on it it seems. I can't even browse my Calibre library away from home with either my Kindle or the Fire much less load books from it.
