This is indeed tragic news. I remember when I lived in San Francisco going by his house. It was reported years ago that he was suffering through depression. My favorite Robin Williams movie was Mrs. Doubtfire (and he had just signed up for a sequel). Of course Mork & Mindy was so good the first 2 years.

Some years ago (maybe 15?), Robin Williams popped in at a comedy club I was at in NYC, to the surprise and delight of the establishment as well as us patrons. Of course, Mr. Williams stole the show. My observation even then: he was brilliant, but manic. Ever since, I've wondered how he could focus long enough to follow a script or be still when scenes required it. But he managed to do so and consistently delivered excellent performances onscreen as well as onstage.

I'm very saddened by Mr. Williams' death and by the despair he must have felt before taking his life.

He had some serious roles in which he did not at all lapse into his Robin Williams persona, and he was just as good as with comedies. He got dinged for doing some really schmaltzy movies like Patch Adams, but in retrospect, maybe that was his way of keeping the depression at bay. From what I've heard, a pretty nice person IRL too.

I liked him in 'Hook' and 'What Dreams may Come.' And of course Mrs. Doubtfire among others. In the scene where Mrs. Doubtfire's blouse catches fire the fire was unintentional, and he ad-libbed his "hot flashes" comment (or so I understand). A great clown has left us, and we are the poorer for it.

And we've lost another actor. Lauren Bacall has died at age 89.

Quote:
Known for her husky voice and sultry looks, Lauren Bacall, the model-turned-actress who starred with husband Humphrey Bogart in classic movies such as "Key Largo" and "To Have and Have Not," has died at age 89.

Her son told CBS News that she died Tuesday morning in New York City. The Humphrey Bogart estate also confirmed the death.

You know how to whistle don't you Steve? I wonder who # 3 will be. With Hollywood it always seems to come in 3's.

I'll greatly miss her, too. Here's another Lauren Bacall quote:

"Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you’re alive, it isn’t.”

He did this a lot in San Francisco also. He just had a knack of taking any situation and making it funny. One of the funniest things I saw him do was describe golf. He made that sport funny for me.

If you'd seen the outtakes you'd see plenty of authentic Robin Williams. When Stellan Skarsgård appeared on the set of Good Will Hunting his first day, Williams did his role as Robert de Niro having sworn cast and crew to keep a straight face. It took Skarsgård a good 15 minutes before he caught on.

The other night when they did a tribute show to Robin Williams Barbara Walters was on and talked about how some of the most comedic moments she had with him were after the cameras were supposed to be off (at the end of interviews). And in one clip of an interview she did with him you can clearly hear the camera crew laughing at his antics when he talked about keeping the lights (flood lights for the shoot) and about soundproofing the floor (carpeting laid down for the interview) among other off the wall things. It seems he could make a joke out of just about anything.
