I can't speak to the light issue -- I still enjoy my Kindle Touch (no light) and read at night with the bedroom light on. 'Cause I've got my own room.

I have a feeling it woks much better than any light could ever be, clip-on or otherwise.

That is incorrect. The 3G on the Paperwhite (and most Kindles except the very early ones, which used Sprint) is via AT&T, not Verizon.

Depends where you live. I'm in France, it uses any network it finds

I know the kobo has a night-time reading hack which makes the text white and the background black. Coolreader also does this. I dont know if the same thing exists for the kindle. It might help. I dont know.

I can read for hours on my Kobo Glo in total darkness with no discomfort at all. I set the light to 1% when my husband is beside me but I don't even find I need to for myself.

It's convenient because I read till I am just about asleep (or just past that point :-), so I just need to close the sleep cover, take off my glasses, and place them on the night table; no fumbling with a lamp. This allows me to drift off to sleep easily.

I read in a completely dark room with my Kindle most nights. I tend to keep the light anywhere from 3-7 in the settings.
