Consider a Palm TX for e-reading
I think the Palm TX is really the best reading device there is. It can do anything that is still very hard or impossible for the current e-ink devices, and for almost half the cost: It is small and handy and beautifully designed; it has a bright, sharp, fullcolor screen of 3,7 inch diagonal, which I find wonderful for reading as it is not too large nor too small (most other PDA's are too small); it flips the pages quickly without any timelag. It reads palm ebooks as well as mobi and adobe. I like my hardware read what I want it to read, not what the manufacturer wants me to read; it should be independent of any supplier.
OK, you can't read in bright sun but you /can/ read in the dark (for e-ink you need a lamp), and you /can/ listen to muzic, surf on the web, check mail and make calls and sms. Also, you can also use it as a mobile working place and transfer Word documents to and from it that are synchronized in the process. The wireless bluetooth keybord is surprisingly pleasant to use, you can fold it in two and take it in the smallest handbag. Battery lasts long and uploads quickly. I use the Palm TX for five years now and wish for nothing better. Although, when Palm would make the TX fit for reading in the sun as well as in the dark, I would probably buy a new one. |

i prefer a non-lit screen, and the screen on the TX is 320x480, which seems small, but i can see where there are advantages to it.

I don't think Palm has any stand alone PDA's any more. Just smart phones.
Opps... actually seems that they do... http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/ BOb |

non-li screen
I agree, non-lit is less tiring for the eye, especially in the dark. But with a non-lit screen in the dark you will need a lamp, while the Palm TX, you can read in the garden at night, or under the blankets in bed, because the screen is backlit. At night I choose black for background color and grey for the font. It makes the light very soft and it is really a pleasant reading experience. I also like to change the background color to 'match' it with the feel of the novel - some novels you like to read on a green background, others maybe in soft blue or gray. To me, color adds a lot to the feeling that I'm reading for pleasure. Reading in black-and-white is more like being at work. I would not recommend other PDA's for reading, not even another Palm, only the TX. I tried several, but the screens are too small, and not enough resolution for pleasant reading.

I had a Palm Tx that I tried to use as an ereader but had to sell it on craigslist so I could get the Kindle. The battery life is too short to be useful and the screen is too small to read comfortably for long stretches. Obviously it has some other advantages like full pdf format support and color but no matter how hard I tried it was not as pleasant reading experience as the Kindle.
