That really depends on the books. If they are in the public domain, then there is no problem.

So I can't make my own shelves in Kobo? I have to use whatever they have?
I know the new Kindles don't allow shelves made on devices--only through the cloud which is one of the reasons I don't want a new Kindle.
You can create shelves on the device. Open the "My Collections" list and tap the menu icon at the end of the gray header to the list. But, it can take a while to add books to the lists.

So let me ask you a question.....how do I set up categories/shelves in Calibre so they show up on the Kobo? Tags?

I did hear some of the ePub books from the nook store had device specific DRM so they may not work, but certainly ePubs bought generally will work.

One of the reasons I left the Kindle was DRM. I think it's wrong. It's like telling someone who bought a hardcover book that they can only read it at home. They can't take it anywhere.

I bought the book, I should be able to read it wherever I want. Regardless of the format.

Lower lowest light setting, better for reading in darkness.
Two-finger swipe light level adjustment without installing third-party hacks.
Double the internal storage.
Capacitive touch non-recessed screen rather than recessed infrared touch screen - individual preferences here.
Somewhat more even lighting.

i use calibre to update as i along with all the other shelves i have 3
aaReading
aaToRead
zzRead

so i have a column & a search set up on calibre so i can add books to any of the 3 shelves (actually use the goodreads sync so goodreads updates what i'm reading/read) and then when i plug my kobo in it will move from toread to reading and then read

i tried to get the readinglist plug in to work but i failed and got bored with it so gave up, but am intending to try again so if i add anything to ToRead it will automatically add it to my Kobo

Then why did you choose a Nook to replace your Kindle? Nook books use DRM just like Kindle books, or Kobo books, or Sony books, or Google books.

and B&N link their DRM to your credit card number, allegedly - better finish those books before your card expires

Not funny. The user and credit card data is run through a hash program and the resulting hashcode is what unlocks the DRM. In fact once you unlock a book that uses a particular set of user data and creditcard #, any others after that (that use the same data) will be unlocked for you automatically. And the expiration date is not part of the hash.

I think it IS pretty funny - not everyone keeps their credit cards as long as their books.

SO, change your bank, change our card, lose your record of the old card number, then change your reader, & it's bye bye books. I could be wrong, but to get your previous purchases books onto new Nook hardware I think you will need that card number.

Leastways, I read many horror stories saying that when I was evaluating whether to get an end-of-like Nook "bargain". ( mostly here, probably, in the Nook forum )

All DRM is a risk and threat to any true ownership of the ebooks that you buy.
The DRM we are talking about is at least one where you can keep control of what you need to unlock the DRM. Most others tie your device and/or the ebook file to servers that you have no control over.

The best and common solution is the one that "apprentice alf" explains on his web site. It is a solution that can let you truly own the ebooks you purchase.

Amen - you are preaching to the choir here, my friend.
I was just having fun & waving a warning flag to the OP

sample horror story follows:
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20...-expires.shtml
... A sale is a sale, even if many rights holders would rather it wasn't. But, Barnes & Noble doesn't see it that way. Sure, you can buy an ebook from them, but you'd better keep everything in your profile up to date if you plan on accessing your purchases at some undetermined point in the future.
Yesterday, I tried to download an ebook I paid for, and previously put on my Nook, a few months ago. When I tried, I got an error message stating I could not download the book because the credit card on file had expired. But, I already paid for it. Who cares if the credit card is expired? It has long since been paid for, so the status of the card on file has nothing to do with my ability to download said book. I didn’t see anything in the terms of service about this either, but it’s possible I missed it.....
