Most books sold by Kobo are Kepubs with DRM, some are pdf format, and some books can be downloaded as epubs with ADE (Adobe Digital Edition) DRM. Books with expired copyright should be epubs or pdf format with no DRM. Kobo store use to tell you what ebook format was available just before purchase. This is less than ideal but better than no indication of what ebook format you about to purchase that now often happens.

There is an plugin for Calibre that will convert epubs to kepubs as they are sent to the Kobo. Look for the KoboTouchExtended plugin. You can download it from the first message in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=211135 or use Calibre / Preferences / Plugins /Get New Plugins to locate it -- enter Kobo in the Filter by Name field to cut the number of plugins you will see.

At this time, jgoguen is no longer supporting the plugin. That said, it is hoped that someone else will take over maintaining the plugin and the current version works quite well.

Good luck!
David

P.S. I prefer this plugin as it leaves the files on your computer as standard .epub files. There is another one by the same author that will convert the files to .kepub on your computer which I have never used. Check for Kepub Output plugin for more information.

kepubs here as well

I used the Kepub output plugin to convert my books to kepub first then transfer them over. Buuuut my metadata plugboard didn't work when transfering those books. So I deleted the Kepub files from my library and now just use the kobo touch extended driver which auto-magically converts the books upon transfer.
