E-books come in a variety of formats (e.g., Kindle, Adobe Digital Editions, EPub, HTML, and more) and can be read on a variety of devices (e.g., e-readers like the Kindle, Nook, and Sony Reader, as well as on personal computers and mobile devices through online portals such as NetLibrary, ebrary, and Google Books). This post shows how to cite any e-book in APA Style.
The APA format blog seems to have some guidelines about citing and referencing eBooks.

(FWIW anyway)

Just because.

(FWIW isn't worth much, apparently. But FWIW, I totally agree that chapter numbers are a perfectly acceptable multi-format compromise. page numbers should die since they don't work for people with ereaders. )

In this case, the paper book is more versatile than the electronic one, since you can arrange pages really any way you want and it will not fail on most eyes and that is easily compensated for in many cases. Page numbers stay page numbers, but the version to version comparison is a problem for both formats. The solution is not another $150 version of the same textbook however.

In situation with an ereader can't you just do a search for the string?

You can and probably should - but if there are typos or other changes between different versions/formats/editions of the ebook, then a search might not produce the expected result.

Calibre's viewer offers per chapter paragraph numbering which should be sufficient (and is one of the options mentioned at the APA Style Blog), but unfortunately is potentially subject to breakage if users edit the ebook and change the file boundaries for some reason (limited memory, etc).

Ultimately, universal paper and ebook citations across formats/editions, might be resolved (in the future) if text version numbering is also included within ebooks.

One of the problems with paper books is that one cannot simultaneously have the book open at a page in the body of the text, and at a references, chapter/end note page, maps etc.

I'm surprised that ebooks didn't address that issue at the get go. I guess its because most reading is fiction. But even some fiction has lists of characters, maps, family trees etc. If they were all in dockable panels then one could view them within the context of the passage one is reading.

Not so easy to do with 6" devices, either for anything practical and maps can be folded out which can not be done with e-readers. Maybe with flexible OLED under development it would be possible. When it is possible we can count on Apple and Adobe to use it to project houri girls in the living room instead of make it possible to fold out a map!

This goes back to my perennial rant....it is not possible to lay out ebooks well to fit all sizes. Real regular size paperbacks don't have tons of fancy formatting any more than you can do it in an ereader.
