my biggest reading issue is night time. that was my initial pull to ebooks as i was reading with a flashlight so as not to wake up my wife and my eyes are not what they used to be. wearing glasses to bed and falling asleep in them is not great either.
so..question..the tablet i have is 9.74 oz and the paperwhite is 7.3...is that enough to make a difference when holding it for a 1/2 hour (min) to 1-2 hours in bed while reading? it seems like such a small amount of weight. |

LOL! Reminds me of my working days (retired now) when I was like "Pavlov's dog". When a new email arrived, my PC would "ding" and an onscreen icon would flash. I'd immediately stop what I was doing and read the email. The company had me well trained! Ended up muting all sound on the PC and putting a sticky-note over the icon ... and fighting the compulsion to peek!

Also, when buying on eBay, look for a reputable dealer (99% or higher seller rating). I bought my Kindle 4S on eBay from a seller that sells lots of items and had an over 99% seller rating. I also looked at the buyer feedback which was overwhelming positive. By looking at the seller feedback and asking the right questions, you can get a quality used Kindle that works for a great price.

Another way to purchase the PW2 cheaper than $119 is to go to a bestbuy store and ask for refurbished. Bestbuy had a sale on brand new PW2's at the time for $99 and I saw a few refurbished ones in boxes next to the new ones. They sold me the refurbished PW2 for $79.00 with a warranty.

Do you have to have a Kindle? You can probably find a first generation Nook Glowlight fairly cheap. I have the newer Nook Glowlight and I think it is a very good ereader. I also have the original Nook that I do not use any more. They are practically giving them away on ebay but they do not have the light.

For me, it certainly is. I have an iPad Mini and a Paperwhite 2. My hands get tired after 30 minutes with the Mini. The PW2 wins hands down for reading. It is just perfectly designed for one thing.
Besides the weight, any LCD tablet is backlit, and so, by design shines into your eyes. The PW2 is frontlit and easy on the eyes. You have also yourself observed that the PW2 is comfortably readable when you are out, even in sunlight. You have not mentioned it, but the battery life of the PW2 is measured in weeks, while for an LCD tablet it is measured in day(s). There have been a number of suggestions about cheap, refurbed Kindles, without front lighting. They overlook that this means going back to reading in bed with a torch, to avoid disturbing your wife. You acknowledge you are an avid (obsessed?) reader. If you really believe that, return the tablet, and retrieve the PW2! |

There's always the option of sticking with the tablet until you can afford an e-ink reader in addition. That would be my choice. I have both a tablet (or two) and a reader (or five; not sure where they came from!), and I feel they complete each other well.
I tried using the Nexus for reading, and it usually works for a book or two, but reading on an e-ink screen is noticeably easier on my eyes and thus more enjoyable. As discussed previously, I also find it easier to fall asleep after reading on a frontlit e-ink device compared to a LCD backlit one. Additionally, I have exactly the same issue with distraction when I read on the tablet. Checking emails, looking up something on Wikipedia (then playing information-seeking Tarzan and swinging from link to link), reading forums for a bit, and so forth. An e-ink reader is like a blissful island of isolation: just the book and I. It helps immersion and actually relaxes, instead of making me feel as if I were at work or attempting to read in a busy room full of nagging people. |
