Once again; when I look at screenshot 3. I see a suggestion for tags (=see left) (which was empty = right). That's good!

But I also see that Published was filled (nov 2013) and that the plugin wants to change that to Undefined. Same is true for Identifiers; there is already an ISBN number and now the plugin wants to change it and add a Reader specific number. I only want the plugin to add tags and leave all the rest as it is. And it should be bulk not one by one.

It looks like there is no option to disable identifiers downloading.

Identifiers have to be downloaded as they are used internally in the download process as cache keys for cover images.

But shouldn't there be a checkbox to control whether the library record metadata gets updated from that download?

No, you can download covers independently of the rest of the metadata. So the identifiers have to be stored somewhere. Now in theory one could setup a dedicated store for them that does not show up anywhere in the UI, but that is *way* too much trouble for the use case.

Why are the identifiers more needed now than they were before metadata download downloaded them?

Say I have a book that has no identifiers. And for whatever reason, I don't want any. Or I have one identifer, and I don't want to see any more.

I download metadata, and get my tags, based on the information previously available. BUT identifiers get downloaded too. Now, if I want, I can override the identifiers by hand each time, choosing the old set to preserve.

What is wrong with having the option to disable updating identifiers, like any other metadata type? If I want to redownload metadata, I am no worse off than I was before I used Metadata Download the first time.

If identifiers are needed for some sort of caching during the download process itself, I don't know why, but you'd know better than I would. But I can't think why they need to be persistent. Even if you use Cover Download only, surely you can find them the same way you find them if there is one/no identifier?

When downloading only cover, no identifiers are stored.

Published will not change from nov 2013 to undefined. So your only difficulty is the identifier field which Kovid as stated is currently out of your control as an option during metadata downloads.

When I redid all of my tags I did them in bulk, about 50 at a time so not to spam Goodreads API with too many queries in a row (they used to frown on mass use of their API). Now that they belong to Amazon maybe everything has been beefed up. But still the option to download metadata in bulk already exists.

Alas this won't help you with your identifier issue.

There is no *absolute need* for them, since a cover only download will redownload and discard normal metadata if identifiers are not present.

But there is also no great harm in keeping them, and they speed up future cover only downloads. As with most things in software design, everything is a tradeoff. (Extra option + my time to code it) > the (imo somewhat dubious) benefit of not downloading identifiers.
