I'm with Tubemonkey, we gave up air travel after 9/11 because of the security measures. We now limit my vacations to car travel within Oregon. This year we are talking about venturing to Idaho and/or Montana. With our devices. That don't need to be powered up

Well, I won't limit my vacation to my country! We went to southern Spain this year and will go to York somewhere in September. The first we did by car (a trip of 6600km, was a lot of fun!), the second will be by boat (should be a lot of fun too!)

"Mobiles could be banned on all flights from Britain" is a title to make sure a lot of people won't go flying anymore as they seem to be addicted to their phones

You have quite a few countries closer to you than I do. I only have Canada nearby. Mexico is some 2,000 km away. These days, 800 km (distance to destination) is my limit for car travel. Next summer, I plan to do a 10-day trip along the Oregon coast.

It's also totally untrue. That's not what the article linked to the headline says at all.

I would have said that it had the reputation of being one of the more serious and reputable British newspapers. I don't read it, so I don't know if it's prone to this type of headline, I'm afraid.

That's not the impression I get. It kind of reminds me of FOX News over here; a news source I avoid at all costs.

No, definitely not. It does generally support the Conservative Party, true enough (all British newspapers have a slant towards one political party or another), but it is a reputable newspaper. Nothing whatsoever like Fox so-called "News", believe me.

I think Harry's right. The Telegraph is generally a reputable paper that, whilst probably leaning towards the right of the political spectrum, is considered relatively impartial.

If you want FOX type reporting in the UK, try the Daily Mail (everything is the fault of immigrants) or the Daily Express (everything is the fault of immigrants and why, oh why, isn't Princess Diana here to help us).

Thanks; nice to know that. I was basing my opinion on headlines I see every now and then. For British news sources, I generally look at two -- BBC and the Guardian.

What, have you no love for Fox News?

I remember, when in Heathrow about 5 years ago, my laptop didn't boot.
The airport staff did have outlets in place, so I could connect my laptop and then boot it.
It could be done directly in the control area, they have been well prepared.
Of course it gets problematic, if your unit doesn't start instantly, but needs some time to charge.

BTW: I've always wondered, what such a quick start of a gadget should even prove. You could simulate a boot sequence via EEPROM and still load the battery compartment and the rest with drugs or explosives. Theoretically, in my opinion, they would have to test the actual functionality, not just accept some animation on a startup-screen.

I've only needed outlets/walls sockets about 3 times in the last 10+ years.
But in those rare cases, the airport staff did have them in place right in the control area. You didn't have to leave the line, you could connect your gadget right there. I have been lucky each time, my gadgets did start immediately and I could move on. I wonder, how many seconds they would have given me. Certainly not in the minutes...

The best way to check suspected devices is to open them
