It also might make (at least a slight) difference how bright your front light on the Paperwhite is as well. Though of course when it's in sleep mode the light doesn't show up as being on.

Don't forget that the touch part of the screen does use power as it has to be able to register when you've touched the screen.
Sony Readers turn off after two days of no use to conserve the battery. You can turn them off if you know you won't be reading for long enough. |

Kindle uses Li-ion polymer batteries. For maximum battery life, leave it in airplane mode except when you need to connect to the internet. In normal use, recharge it regularly by topping off every few days and try to maintain your charge level between 30% - 80%. In normal use, try not to let the battery drain completely. If you aren't using it, you should still try to recharge it every few weeks.
Unlike older ni-cads, li-ion batteries don't have a memory effect and don't require charging cycles, although there's some support for the idea that completely discharging them every month or so may be of some benefit. I don't bother trying to do this and have never found it worth the trouble. With normal use, the average life of Li-ion batteries is about 3 to 5 years. This article contains excellent information about best practices to maintain Li Ion batteries: http://lifehacker.com/5875162/how-of...g-its-lifespan Complete information about Li-ion and other rechargeable batteries can be found at Battery University: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/a..._ion_batteries Last edited by jscarbo; 07-18-2014 at 05:45 AM. |

Have you just plucked this fact out of the air or is there any indication that the touch element of the screen is on or off during sleep? It's not like you can wake up e-ink ereaders by touching the screens after all?

How long will a fully charged kindle without a lighted screen and with wi-fi turned off maintain it's charge while not being used? I'm assuming I haven't recently added any books so no indexing.

When your Reader is not in sleep or off, the touch part of the screen does use power.

A couple of months, easily. I've not touched my PW since I bought my T68 a couple of weeks ago. I've just looked at it now and the battery meter hasn't visibly shifted from where it was when I last used it.

An eInk screen image will not "freeze". Likewise, it will not "burn-in" an image into an eInk screen. Some eReaders display a "ghost" image due to an incomplete page refresh, but that is not "burn-in" and is temporary. No form of screen damage will occur.

Sorry your reply in #17 made it seem like you were pointing out the touch screen still uses power when you pointed out the Sony switches itself off to conserve power. It's not doing so for the touch screen because it's already off anyway since the touch screen doesn't wake the reader up from sleep.
