Just because you use a CC search, or tell Goog to look for PD, doesn't mean that what's returned IS in the PD. When you track down an image on, say, Flickr, usually it will have CC rights, but you have to credit the photographer. CC is not "PD." It's similar, but not the same. PD means that the creator has either passed away, and it's been X years since s/he died, or, s/he deliberately put it INTO the PD, overtly and expressly.

You are not really being clear about the what/how you do. In your first post, you pretty much said, "I just want to be able to use these photos without doing all the work of tracking down the owners and permissions and just using it," arguing that you are not using it for commercial purposes, but you are. You're an author; you have a twitter account, and you can't realistically argue that you've NEVER posted a link to your book's sales page on Twitter, FB, etc., for people to look at and hopefully buy. That makes it pretty "commercial."

So, look, as we've all told you: get a tweeting and social media tool, like Hootsuite. You can probably use their free version, or their cheap version. It's only a few bucks a month. Then you can put image urls in all you want (and Hootsuite automatically shortens them for you, too). Or one of the other platforms--Mac users like another one better, that's a lot like HS.

It's either that, or do all the heavy lifting. There isn't an in-between. Sorry, but that's the way it is. As previously mentioned, you wouldn't like it if people posted free copies of your entire book all over the net, either. Photographers, illustrators, font creators--all these people have the same Intellectual Property rights that you do. Use the right tools, and you can worry a lot less about it. Or do the work. Or use stuff that's on archives.org only.

Thanks Hitch. In that first post I was just rambling a bit, thinking out loud. I'm getting what you're saying.

I only have used photos in pd, and yes, I know that CC and Flickr etc doesn't mean it's in the pd.

What do you make of sites like Moguefile, Pixababy and RGB Photos that require no attribution?

Thanks for the Hootsuite suggestion. I actually have an account. But I find that I add such a short comment to most photos that there's plenty of room for the full link on Twitter.

I'm getting what you guys are telling me. I'm going to add links to the photos.

I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks!

P.S. Hitch, does archives.org have digital photos? I saw ebooks, text, video but couldn't find any photos.

P.S.S. Do you know of any other pd sites like that?

P.S.S.S. Thanks

Gregg:

You're confusing FREE with PD. Morguefile absolutely and positively requires that you post attribution for the creator. http://www.morguefile.com/about . You can use Pixababy images on social platforms, according to their terms, but I'd be careful. RGB Stock sometimes requires that you contact the image owner for permission. See this: http://www.rgbstock.com/faq and look down, to the licensing information. Even RGBstock doesn't warrant and represent that they are 100% sure that EVERY image is usable without permission.

Really, Gregg: just use something like Hootsuite, or do the dreaded homework. There's no such thing as a free lunch, essentially, in the photographic, digital-age world. I mean, I use CC searches all the time, and find adequate images for articles, blog posts, etc. If you're posting about something from TV, say, look for media kits. Ditto for logos. But it's just a lot of work, essentially, to use images without having to do the trackdown sweat and obtain the necessary licenses, releases, yadda.

I read both Morgeufile and RGB photos rule before I ever used a photo from either site. In Morguefile it says to check each image (see screenshot) and it says the same thing for RGB photos. I have never used a photo that was restricted in any way from either site, and if you notice the Morguefile screenshot, it specifically says: "Attribution is not required." Maybe some of the photos there require attribution, but I have never seen one.

That said, you have convinced me to include a link (and perhaps more--the title of the photo, the creator, license etc.). Why not. It's only fair.

One thing I still don't get though is how Hootsuite is going facilitate the process. To be displayed in the Twitter stream (which is what I want--like I showed in a previous post in this thread), most all images need to be modified to fit the Twitter ballpark parameters. How is just posting a link in Hootsuite going to do that?

Thanks, and thanks for coaxing me down this road to see this issue more clearly.

Gregg:

Have you used Hootsuite? Just grab an image URL, put it in the shortener, and Bobs-yer-uncle. If you're trying to make an image fit some pre-existing size parameter, then I don't know what to tell you. Somehow, it seems like whatever I post, as long as it's not crazy-big, shows up. Landscape, Portrait, rectangle, square, whatever.

I mean, you do realize that people are reading these in Tweet-feed readers, right? It's not like they're going to see the entire image, no matter WHAT you do, without clicking on it anyway. Or, if they use a program like Hootsuite on the web, doing a hover-over.

I don't know the "how." I don't write web-apps, I'm busy enough doing my own thing. I just know it works. And saves an ENORMOUS amount of time over doing all that copy, trim, save, paste, yadda-yadda. Just put the image URL, itself (make sure you FIND the actual image url) into the shortener, and there you go.

Thanks, Hitch. I used HS a long time ago but never with adding photos. I'll re-visit it. Really appreciate all the help!

BTW, Gregg, when you have multiple postscripts, you expand the P's, not the S's

Ie:

P.S.
P.P.S.
P.P.P.S.
Etc.
