I've been exchanging docx with Open Office users for several years, Open, Libre and Apache versions, I have no problems converting them with calibre to EPUB or reading them in Word, pretty sure they're the Word 2007 compatible variant.

To create Strict Open XML documents with M$ Office you need the 2013 edition Ψ²

If you have a bunch of doc files this thread explains how to do batch conversions with free tools. Specifically check out posts 23, 49 and 56. The example batch files are for Windows but the main program used is Abiword which has a Linux version so you ought to be able to adapt this to Linux.
