I have it. Works great for extending the charge life to like 10 billion page turns, but takes a really really long time to charge the unit. I have not been patient enough yet to leave it on the time required to charge my 505. Works with the 500 too and it takes 4 AA's. You can also change heads on the thing so it can be used to charge other stuff like an annoying cell phone.

I am curious how long would it take to fully charge the reader and how many AAs you need to fully charge it.

I've only used it once; I had 2 bars and it took an hour for it to fully charge. I don't know how many more times I can use it before I drain the 4AA batteries.

This one should work in a similar way and can't get any smaller
http://cgi.ebay.es/New-PSP-Emergency...QQcmdZViewItem I would add some Hybrio rechargeable batteries that can be stored charged http://cgi.ebay.es/UNiROSS-HYBRIO-8-...QQcmdZViewItem I use these AA for my mouse and AAA for my Mighty Bright double led light. http://cgi.ebay.es/Mighty-Bright-Xtr...742.m153.l1262 These batteries can stay charged for (supposedly) up to a year keeping a 70% of the charge. In fact, they are sold charged. They work perfect. This is a way to make the battery charging cheaper. When you are not traveling, you can use the batteries for remotes, mouses, discmans (or is it discmen?), etc. |

There's a more interesting question: What's the voltage output ?
4 non-rechargeable batteries make for 6 V, 4 rechargeable ones make for 4.8 V. So if the voltage is 6 V, we know for more or less sure that the Reader withstands 6 V input voltage. If it's 4.8, we know we could use rechargeable batteries as a recharging power source. If so, it'll be a breeze just getting hold of a 4-batteries holder and simply solder a piece of wire and a plug to it and we're done. If voltage is regulated down to 5.2 Volts, we'll need a 5-batteries holder and a voltage regulator if we're into DIY. Estimated costs of a DIY mobile charger/backup battery: 3 Euros plus batteries. Drawback: Some effort. Benefits: Flexibility and free choice of batteries, usability beyond the magical 1-year-till-dead-barrier of LiIon batteries, and the priceless "I-made-it-myself" feeling. ![]() So it might be a great thing if you hook up your voltage meter and tell us the results. ![]() |

I recommend the PowerMonkey. A rechargeable battery that charges everything, recharges from mains, pc, or solar. The solar also charges accessories directly. Comes with many tips, incl.mini-usb,PSP, regular usb socket, etc. It is sometimes on sale with a huge rebate.

A DIY Portable Battery Charger
The output voltage with the NI-MH battery is 4.8 to 5 volts.
It will charge the reader in 1 to 2 hours. http://underside.110mb.com/sony%20battery/ |
