In my opinion, it shines less than my PW2. But it's hard to describe online. Now, believe it or not, my iPad Air shines more than the retina Mini. The iPad Air can be really bright. |

I have an iPad Air and a KPW2--I do read on the iPad sometimes (Marvin makes reading on the iPad enjoyable). But personally, I like reading on the KPW2 better than reading on the iPad. Like the size of the KPW2 and the backlight on the iPad will cause eyestrain for me if I read for extended periods of time. I also read outside in bright sunlight quite a bit, and of course the KPW2 is great for this.

I really enjoy reading on my Mini Retina! No eye strain at all. My biggest issue is that it can seem a little heavy at times. Battery life is great for international flights. I've stopped traveling with my KPW2 unless my trip is longer than 10 days.

I have both an iPad mini retina and the Paperwhite 2. I read on my Paperwhite at home and my iPad mini travels with me. My only exception to that would be holidays when I'll take both devices with me. I read using the Kindle app so whispersync is important, for me both devices co exist perfectly together.

I don't think the ipad Mini retina could be better for reading than the Kobo Aura HD. I could be wrong. But the screen and the text rendering on it is fabulous.
Compared to the thin fonts on the paperwhite, sure. |

That's interesting. I'd have thought the shine would be the same. I have the iPad Air. I'm able to use it outside on the deck in the sun to check things online without trouble, (with the brightness up all the way) but I couldn't use it outside to read on.

I find that the iPad Retina Mini isn't usable in direct sunlight. It's fine in the shade, but the screen is completely washed out by sunlight. That's why I always take my PW2 away on holiday with me (in addition to the iPad), because that's when I tend to do a lot of reading outside.

True. To me, both (Air and Mini) are pretty much useless out door. Unless I'm covered by strong shade. It also drains battery faster, because screen brightness switched to max setting. |

I will always prefer my pw2 for reading, but this is one of the finalists that I am considering when I replace my 2013 Fire in the Fall. I am holding out to see what improvements the 2014 Fire's will have. But they better be worthy because I am seriously giving up on the Fires and going with the Nexus or back to Samsung's Galaxy Tabs.

I have both the retina iPad Mini and a Kobo Aura and although the iPad is good for many things, when I want to read anything more than a brief article online, I much prefer reading on the Aura. This is because the form factor and weight of the Aura make it far more comfortable to use for longer periods, also a much longer battery life and less eye strain (for me anyway).

It looks like all of us use a multitude of devices to read our eBooks. It seems just one device will never suffice.
Plus, every year we get new ones. Its a never ending cycle. |

I used to upgrade every year. I'm happy with my devices now, and won't upgrade any of them til they either fall apart, or something truly whiz-bang arrives.
