I had some trouble with it crashing/resetting while viewing large pdf files. I took out the unformatted memory card and deleted the pdfs and haven't had too many problems since.

I had the same problem bob did when I converted the pdfs to doc via a free converter I downloaded. They looked alright in doc format, but when I converted them from the doc to html or mobi the formatting was screwy. It's not completely unreadable, but it isn't exactly nice either.

A few pdfs worked but the text was so tiny that it was difficult to read, unfortunately. Hopefully a future firmware update will give us some better pdf viewing options, but as of the moment I haven't found too many workarounds.. Converting has been the only workaround I've found and the files tends to format messily.

Well I must admit the idea of the Cybook is great but the implementation is awfull.

Apart from the crashing the library page is useless, once you get a few hundred books on it the time it takes to actually get to your book by scrolling through the library pages is far too much.

Why didn't they just do a text based library with folders.

I'm hoping that will come soon. Right now, I end up leaving most of my ebooks on my computer and just keeping the short-list of 'reading' and 'about-to-be-read' on my cybook. I take off what I've already read, unless it's a true favorite.
What would be a good way to back up my library in case my computer walks off, or dies a grisly death?

I have my library on my PC in the form of a folder tree - one folder per author; within that, one folder per book; in that folder are all the files associated with the book (including all the files used to create it, if it's one I've created myself).

I have a "two level" backup system - every time I change the library I copy it to an external USB hard disk. About once a month, I copy it to DVD (it currently takes 4 DVDs) and store those at work just in case a disaster should befall my house!

I am interested in this system, but I don't understand how it works...Does the cybook just ignore the folders? How do you set it up?
I like the separate folder per book--at this point, I've just been using Mobireader to manage my books; if I look in the directory it's very confusing with all of the different files for each book, many of them with very cryptic file names.
This is a very nice aspect of ebooks--how else can you evacuate with your whole library?

Will DVDs survive in a fireproof box for documents?

Actually, DVDs *LOVE* living in fireproof boxes! However, they hate *warm* fireproof boxes, so please do not subject said boxes to burning conditions.

<snort> Ha, ha...

I looked on the Wiki(now that I know there is one and what a 'wiki' is...) about the file system...You say you have a folder per book, for all of the files for that book. Now, that folder is in a folder for, say, 'hard SF' in the 'ebooks' folder. The cybook can deal with that? Does it take longer to load the library?

The Cybook is not currently capable of using folders the same way your computer does. You will not see a list of folders. What is *does* allow you to do is a rudimentary organizing of your ebooks. The library still only displays the ebooks themselves, but the order in which they are shown can be controlled.

If you have set the library to "sort by file path" the books are displayed according to the order of the folders. If you have two folders, named "Alpha" and "Beta", all of the books in folder Alpha will be displayed....followed by all the book in folder Beta. Books within a folder are displayed based on the sort setting for the library.

So..the cybook will put the books in the order they are in on the PC, which is done with folders, but the cybook will not store them in folders internally, just a list. Hmmm. Well, it's better than just alphabetical by title.

No - 4.7GB per DVD; about 18GB total, something like that. I've got about 20,000 books - mostly PG and Baen stuff.

I think you may have slightly misunderstood - I'm talking about the way I organise my books on my PC, not on the CyBook! I've currently got about 150 books on my CyBook, out of the 20,000+ I have on my hard disk.

Built-up over 20+ years, I should say. Certainly not something I've acquired in a hurry.
