Again, standards AREN'T the problem here.

You seem to be stuck in a world view in which everything is free and accessible to everyone. Sadly, real world is not like that. Content costs and people want money for providing it to you.

In other words - it's not the software, it's the service.

I would agree that it's the service, but that service is enabled by the right software architecture/approach. That is where Amazon got it right, but I also agree the complexity of deploying a similar model globally without the end user having additional costs would be difficult, but it could be done. For example Amazon could develop agreements with the carriers that gives them a few cents per MB of data for the downloading of a book. Just one example of how a business model could evolve. It will be interesting to see which way this goes.

These two competing technologies in terms of data transfer to mobile devices, that is mobile carriers and wifi-wimax standards, translate to pretty much every mobile device not just ebooks, and here we got just another example. I don't know the inside scoop of the whole thing but it's pretty obvious that there's going to be a struggle in terms of wifi and mobile ips and networks such as evdo. And I am sure evdo is glad to offer an infrastructure to amazon, and amazon their clout, like another poster said, if they are to be the de facto provider of a bestselling device.

Much more complicated with irex of course as other posters have said, but for me the issue of actually getting some decent mobile content on the iliad is not the carrier tec, wifi or mobile, itself but the content providers. If a couple of bestselling newspapers get behind it in a few countries they are going to make the wifi functional and not merely decoratory in a matter of days, or even add mobile carrier connectivity if they so choose to deliver their media this way.

Excellent points. That has been one of my big frustrations with the iLiad, as a platform it's just not evolving. The ids concept is fantastic, but not much has materialized to really take advantage of it. I really do like the iLiad, but I'm not convinced of the long term viability of the company at this point.

Some minor inroads have been made, whether it is getting a few schools in native Holland to carry the iliad, or a couple of newspapers there. But for me the issue is (possibly) related of who will have the leverage to push an ebook platform forward. A giant bookstore that uniformy serves one country such as amazon is a pretty straight forward senario, as well as a software giant such as sony. And that's where irex is of course seriously lacking in terms of adoption. (I am reminded though now of parent co. philips and the huge leverage they have (not that it has served them much in promoting other inovations of theirs)).

A WiMAX enabled iLiad with a Kindle-like content providing model would be great
If WiMAX would/could finally get a stronger hold in Europe, that is...

In fact, i'd like to see a Kindle / Nokia N810 WiMAX cross. An N810, with a slightly larger e-ink screen, Kindle's content, but with the slide out keyboard and GPS retained. E-ink would be awesome for maps, and a slide-out keyboard seems like a much more elegant solution than the Kindle's thumbpad.

The industrial design of the Kindle still has me scratching my head. It doesn't look as bad in real life as it does in pictures and it is definitely smaller than it appears in the pictures, but how they thought this thing was even remotely attractive still amazes me. One other thing I realized yesterday is that the white casing is really terrible in sunlight. I figured it would be, but the reflection was even a little harder on the eyes than I thought it would be.

I don't know why, but to me it looks like an outdated piece of (electronic) medical equipment

At least in photos. Haven't seen it in real life.

LOL, I used to work in the medical equipment field and you're right. I hadn't thought of that until I saw your note.
