Well, my education continues apace and my gratitude flows in equal measure. But where did you guys learn to be so patient with this software? The problem for today: I use Sigil to insert an image, find it in "Other files" ... yep-that's the one, Sigil displays it in the preview - click okay ... back in book-view ... no image! Just a query in a blue square. But this technique worked perfectly on the book I converted yesterday. I look at the html for where it worked and compare it with the html that isn't working ... they are identical! Even worse is where I insert a cover image that does display perfectly - until I edit other sections and go back to the Cover section - and now it, too, has become a query in a blue square. Go figure.

Then you are doing something wrong... The principle is simple. You add the pictures to the book and you can see them under the Images folder in the bookbrowser. Then you either insert the image by typing the reference to it manually in codeview or use the menu (Insert --> File..., select the image) and the image should work.
The behavior you are experiencing I have never seen. I never learned to be patient with this software, it just works... |

So I'm waiting for Office2007 to arrive so that I can use Toxaris's Word add-on - the last ditch before I cave in and accept that ebook making is not for amateurs. Don't go away, now.

There are many of us amateurs here. All of us had to figure out these sorts of issues that once figured out will make you smack your head and go, duh.
CSS seems incomprehensible until you get it, then you see it really is the only way to go. Hundreds of changes made at once by editing one file. I see your problem. Images do NOT belong in other files, they belong in the Images folder. Nothing in the other files folder will be displayed. They end up there if they lack an extension, like .jpg, .png, etc that is recognized as an image. If another program put the images elsewhere, drag them to images and make sure you keep all image names in lower case, in both file name and in the html. Doing so is not mandatory, but it will make your life much simpler. Let Sigil do the work of image importing and making a table of contents, it will save you a ton of work and grief. |

I use Word 2000 and don't want to grapple with Python, so I paste my Word docs into word2cleanhtml dot com online. Requires only minimal touchup, and often not even that.

I second AWP. Easy to use and for as low as $10 with a coupon you can find on the web from time to time.
Easier to use than either Sigil or Calibre. You can drag images into a page and drop them, or copy and paste them. Word processor features make it easier. Then you just publish to epub, check it out and then correct mistakes and publish again. If there is something AWP can't do, THEN use the calibre editor or Sigil. That is what they are made for. The main big thing it doesn't do is tables. But many users here don't need them. Even so, you can do everything but the table or two in AWP, then add it in Sigil or the Calibre editor to add them to the otherwise finished epub. |
