Isn't part of whether a book is cheaper in a given country dependent on the VAT and what the local government sets that at? That is in the countries that have VAT of course. They don't have it on Amazon here in the US. Just a straight sales tax which is usually not that much. I've bought some .99 books that ended up being $1.06 or something like that with the tax included.

For me Amazon is cheaper 95 % of the time. Kobo do give out discount coupons but they are often not applicable to the books that I want to buy. When I do find a book I want that I can use the voucher with, sometimes it is cheaper than Amazon, usually not by much. However sometimes it is still more expensive after the discount is applied.

Thanks for these posts! I've only ever bought one book from Kobo so far (Books On Board were always my 'other' option from Amazon), as just like shanghaichica, I tend to find Amazon is pretty much always cheaper, but I've been a bit lost since the Kobo site changes. Now at least I know how to check for possible discounts again!

Selection and price has favored Amazon in EVERY comparison that I have EVER made. Literally. Anecdotal cyanide.

I'm surprised at the number of people who have had such luck with Amazon prices. In my experience (in Canada and switching regions on both stores if necessary) I have NEVER chosen Amazon over Kobo when I've had a specific book in mind. I am content to wait for a 50-75% off coupon for Kobo than pay ~$12.

I rarely pay more than US $5.99 - and usually pay $2.99 or less - for an ebook from Amazon. Patience is the key, and using a service like ereaderiq.com to track price drops.
