LOL, well I do have two books from the local library in there. I was searching for the two books they had in the catalog by David Drake one day, and couldn't find them. They eventually located them: they were slated to be discarded because no one had checked them out in around a decade. Since I had asked for them, they just gave them to me and told me to keep them. Both excellent books too, it's a shame no one else was checking them out.

They did have a few here at MR, but I think they were taken down (either before or) as a result of the change over for where MR has its servers. A while back Black Mask had them (though not for free) on a cd disk but then Condi Nast came along and claimed they owned them (along with almost everything else) so they were pulled. I don't know where you could find legal free copies now days if in the U.S. I don't even know where you can find legally purchasable copies for that matter.

There is a small collection on Arthur's Bookshelf (SciFi, Shelf 2) in HTML format http://arthursbookshelf.com/bookshelf.html . If Ralph Sir Edward's list is correct I think all those are ok in Life + 50 countries (which, for the sake of keeping good order, I'll mention that includes me).

So there are a few around for eBook hunting hounds who know the crannies of the internet to sniff around in, and who live in Life + 50 countries.

I have just checked and the Blackmask CD can also be found too, but if it is anything like mine (which hails from around 2002, as I was collecting ebooks way back then ) each book is in .lit and .htm format and no covers; they were primitive times eBook-wise. There are around 140 Doc Savage books on my CD, I have not checked every one but they seem to be fine now for those of us in Life + 50 countries.

I don't know where it is now but back in the day I bought the CD of The Shadow ebooks from Black Mask (this was before their problems) and it also included books in mobi format. Maybe some didn't come in that format though so I can't say either way about Doc Savage.

As has already been stated, you won't find any legal free copies in the US, because the books are not in the US public domain. Black Mask were distributing them illegally and were prosecuted for doing so.

Yep. Or at least that's how it worked out with revision of copyright and so forth. Of course at the time I got the CD (of the Shadow) they hadn't yet been even accused of wrong doing. And the ones that were posted here were early ones (and were posted before MR went to the +70 copyright some months back). I do understand why they were pulled and was just stating that some were here and were pulled. I imagine it's hard to find them (legally) to purchase here in the U.S. too. At least I haven't seen any offers up of late. Of course the same people who claim to own Doc Savage and others also claim to have ownership rights over most Old Time Radio programs (which they will sell you) a few episodes at a time for a lot of $.

They were indeed here, but were not legal to download for anyone in the US or the EU.

Whoever may or may not claim to own them doesn't change the absolutely undeniable fact that they are not in the public domain in the US. SOMEBODY owns the copyright, and who that somebody might be doesn't alter the fact that they're not in the public domain.

I am not saying that they are or aren't, though the situation is more clouded in the case of the OTR programs that they claim to own. Most of them had no copy right notices woven into the opening and in fact the only reason they survived in many cases is because listeners at the time recorded them off the radio live. Then a company purchases copies of them from the collectors and claims to own media that wouldn't have been preserved if someone hadn't made the initial copy. The actual recordings were on either metal disks (which could only be played a few times) or large record like media which often would be dumped in the local radio stations garbage bin after being played on the air. But the same company that claims ownership of Doc Savage etc. also claims to own the OTR recordings. So I don't quite know to trust their claims.

That's the same reason I now own them, too.

I bought Black Mask's entire set of CDs, and included on them were Doc Savage and (I think?) The Shadow.

I would probably have bought more but didn't at the time and then of course they had to take them down. Still their revamped site Munsey's does have a good assortment of free pd books.

Actually, when I now look at it properly, mine is a DVD. I found this thread and post #3 dated in 2003 refers to at least one DVD being available https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=480.

It is almost full, around 4GB of books on it for the two sets of file formats, so another set wouldn't fit on it. So I suspect there was perhaps the choice of formats for the DVD (and perhaps the CDs too) and so mobi would have been one of the alternatives. Memory cells getting strained here though .

And yes, The Shadow is on it too.

I have just been slowly working my way through the Battlestar Galactica books when I want a nice easy read as a break; I may have to have another go at some Doc Savage too .
